So you can keep the stock hands in tact, and just slide these on for Bot mode? Then remove for chopper mode? Hmmmm, I'm into that more actually than ripping apart a figure.

Is that how it works?

 

Just received the Shockwave's Lab Blackout hands. I think the photos in this thread demonstrate how they work fairly well. Don't transform the original hands - leave them folded up and then slip the tab on the base of the SL hands into the gap at Blackout's "wrist". The SL hands cap the area where the stock hands would have folded out. The SL hands do NOT need to be removed for transformation, but they are visible in vehicle mode. It's a fair compromise though because there's no other way to fix the stock hands without a much more complex solution. And they can be removed for transformation, but why? The helicopter is already busy enough that the hands are just another part of the greebling. There is a crescent piece in the palm that creates a partially open 5mm port for holding weapons. It's unobtrusive when emptyhanded and a nice added touch.

The quality is typical for Shockwave's Lab stuff. Durable. Seems to be printed material (in white, painted metallic black) rather than injection molded. The resolution is quite high and should be good enough for most people. The paint is well applied.

In short, these hands fix a problem that never should have been there in the first place. A better or cheaper solution is unlikely (outside of a KO that incorporates a redesign). It's hard to imagine anyone preferring the stock hands to these. It would be nice if more 3rd party items could be as uncontroversial as SL's Blackout hands.

Uncle Billy has these in-stock now and ships them unbelievably quickly. Everyone should get a pair.

Thanks for the review! I will most likely pick these up now. How does the color blend with the grey plastic of the rest of his body? Also, can you at least fold up the fingers so that they stick out less in chopper mode?

 

I have a question. Is there a way to swing that piece on his chest all the way down and around before transforming it?

 

The metallic black on the hands is close to the painted highlights on the raised parts near the sides of the rotor / engine piece in robot mode, and a near match to the painted parts of the head. They don't match the light gray of the upper limbs or the dark gray of rotors. I don't know if this is accurate to the movie model or not, but it's not a deal breaker. The hands could easily be painted with a spray can or brush if someone wanted to change the color.

They do not really move out of the way for transformation. Instead, they rotate so that the thumb piece is facing up and the two fingers are facing down in helicopter mode. There is some play in the fingers, but not enough to change the look. They're hands, they're visible, but they're not grossly out of place on a helicopter that has no real bottom.

The boom / arm on the front of the helicopter can be moved to point towards the figure's back during transformation, and it almost looks like at some point they considered it but then abandoned the idea. You have to flex the plastic on the arm sideways to move around a tight spot and once it has been pointed backwards it will interfere with some of the leg articulation. It cleans up the front, but it would be better if someone made an aftermarket arm that collapses. I don't know if the movie model had the arm pointing forward, backward, or what but it doesn't bother me.

The movie designs are weird, garish, and alien in a way that - to me personally - doesn't inspire an urge to consider "accuracy". I like the bizarre proportions, details, and goofiness on their own terms. As a toy though, Blackout's original hands were frustrating in their uselessness. Shockwave's Lab gave us a great solution though - big props to their design people.

Technically, you can, but you have to force it past his hips and hip skirt, and moving the leg around with it there is probably gonna wreck the tab on the top. IIRC, the refueling probe (yes thats what it is) just sticks out of his chest in the movie - albeit retracted a bit - so I just leave it up all the time.
