All this talk of Shockwave not being imposing or interesting in the cartoon... *shakes head*
That's not how I remember him at all, and even rewatching the compilation of his cartoon appearances I never felt that he was lame or useless. He was Megatron's loyal servant, he was big and imposing when Spike and Carly went to Cybertron in Desertion of the Dinobots - I mean the way he just completely disintegrated things was scary as fuck to me as a kid!

The funny thing there is that the comics used the exact same animation model as the cartoon...




And Shockwave is one of the characters that actually looks so much like his original toy, too.



In a way, any complaints that Shockwave isn't beefy enough could stem from the fact that they were trying to emulate the litheness of the toy a little bit in the MP's design.

So really, apart from wanting a darker purple, I'm not sure what other homages people are expecting from their MP Shockwave. I think it all boils down to size, and I imagine if a KO company upsized Shockwave to be Megatron's height a lot of people would be really happy. As a toon fan, his size is perfect. But I can understand those who want him to see eye-to-eye with Megatron.

 

Your problem is you’re too positive for this forum!   Didnt you know it’s cool these days to complain no matter what Takara do?   Its the same in the MP-42 thread with people butthurt Cordon has some different parts and accessories to Sunstreaker - almost as if the Diaclone homage repaint coming with different accessories and/or toy inspired elements hasn’t been happening since at least MP-23. Screw you Takara for going the extra mile to differentiate a repaint!

I’m the same as you. Love MP-29 and was OK with his colour. Nobody had a gun to my head when I bought it. It’s a fun piece to pick up and fiddle with with its simple but genius enough transformation that easily trumps the 3p efforts. I do prefer the new version’s colour but not sure if I’ll pick him up at that price as the original is fine by me.

I think people grumbling about the price of this and Cordon have a fair point though. I’ve always defended Takara’s pricing as it’s always seemed fair - I was quick to point out Megatron was priced in line with MP-10 when people were moaning about price gouging, and similarly that Sunstreaker warranted the increase over the old carbots due to his parts count and complexity. But this being more than OG MP-29 even when you factor out the lack of discount on account of it being a TT mall exclusive, and Cordon being a main release repaint and costing more than Sunstreaker are hard to justify. I’m definitely getting Cordon but this might end up being passed up.

 

That's great, I'm well aware that I'm picky and more than a little fickle when it comes to such things. To me the bright lilac didn't work with the rest off my MP Decepticons or with the dark dangerous character I've always seen him as (thanks to the Marvel Comics). To my mind they could have made him in green and it would have been no less jarring....I exaggerate but you get my point.

You are right it is a win/win and I'm not frustrated, well maybe by the price but I can swallow it. Did anyone not expect a repaint at some point? Well I expected a repaint but I was more expecting Shackwave so this is a pleasant surprise.

Those are the only too issues I ever had, like I said I think the mould is perfect, the best of all that is available...he just needs to be the right colour and if im being REALLY picky an inch taller. When I mentioned a more broad overview than just using the animation mode as a guide I was talking more broadly about the MP line in general.

 

29+ is about 30% more expensive than MP-29, which is a little less of an increase than the other + releases had over their originals.

Apart from 14+, the other + releases have come with extra accessories which can warrant the price increase, as well as slightly more paint coverage. 29+ does come with a brand new head/face (similar as it is to the original), as well as one extra hand (not a new mould or anything). It remains to be seen if he has any more paint coverage than 29. If he did, I'd certainly feel the price increase is justified, but if he isn't I won't be too disappointed.

It's worth noting that the exchange rates against the Yen are generally a lot worse now than they were end of 2015 / beginning of 2016 when this guy was up for preorder and release. The cost of importing, eh?

 

Really? He wasn’t useless?! My problem is I can barely remember him in the show and Dr Smoov Shockwave has somehow become ‘my Shockwave’!!   Need to watch those undubbed clips and see if you’re right  .

 

Ah you know I’m forgetting the other + releases being more expensive than their OGs as I didn’t get them. I was instead recalling other repaints like DM, exhaust and road rage not being more expensive. So at least 29+ isn’t unprecedented although not sure that justifies it! If it’s fully painted it’s worth it! Of course there’s the Seekers being more expensive than OG MP-11 too, but that was Hasbro Asia’s doing. Maybe this is too?

I think 42 being a main release repaint and being more than OG could be a first though? Or was something like that Primal repaint more than OG? Dunno.

 

Never seen Dr Smoov, now I'd be worried it'd spoil G1 for me!

I think Artfire and TM Hot Rod were both more than Inferno and MP-28, but that could be warranted by their Target-Masters. I think TT have just realised that the sweet spot for these repaints is a little bit more expensive. They're never going to be as popular as the main characters, and if people really want them then perhaps they'll willing to pay a little more of a premium for them. I don't imagine TT had great sales from Road Rage, despite her new parts.

Not familiar with Hasbro's scale jargon, but I assume that means you'd like an MP-36 sized one too

Completely agree. I am quite happy with the tone of purple on the original release. Reminds me of the G1 japanese figures like Galvatron.

 

Right. I only collect MPs so I still don't know how big that is   What size is that in reference to an existing MP, like MP-28?

Same here. MP-29 and MP-29+ both look good. While I’d like to have the darker version, I don’t need to have it and am perfectly happy with the original. Except for the broken foot.

If you’ve never seen G1 Season 3 then you might want to watch it befor watching Dr. Smoov’s “Rude Awakening if Optimus Prime”. But be sure to watch Dr. Smoov’s stuff eventually — it’s gold.
