I'm not sure if it's correct or not, but it seems that people around here refer to the "spike-ball-thing" as the "mace" and the "clump of spikes on the end of a pole" as the "staff", just to differentiate.

Well, considering that DNA Designs' upgrade kits are the cheapest priced upgrade kits out there, it is kind of strange to hear someone say that they think it's too expensive. And considering how some other users will go into threads about things they don't like just to purposefully hate and troll and cause problems, I guess that makes some of us a little jumpy when other users say certain things.

 

@bubbalew, some cursory wikiing suggests that both a mace and a morning star should have solid handles, and both are basically spiked clubs.

So, I guess we’ve just all been chatting about a chain mace.

But, that staff is almost certainly a warhammer.

However, if you put it in the mits of a CHUG or MP combiner, then the (war)hammer might be more like a Shillaleigh  

And, @mx-01 archon, the photos I can recall seeing of KingBat in spear mode seemed to suggest that the bat wings were not happy about being a shaft for the bat and sword speartip, hence my thinking it was floppy.

Though it might’ve been that it was listing to one side or another because the connection had been nudged a bit when placing the whole spear in a figure’s hands.

 

When were Ultra's the size of ROTF Leaders? Because Studio Series Grimlock is huge.

Did Grimlock actually use the hand-mace on a chain at any point in AOE/TLK, or is this just an original idea from DNA Designs?

 

Blink-and-you’ll-miss-it but when he’s first freed by Optimus and begins to challenge him his mace is on a chain at first, then it retracts into his forearm and becomes the ball hand after like two seconds.

SIGH, so much wasted potential in these movies....

The stock Grimmy is so close to what I wanted but the sacrifices in robot mode turned me off.
I haven't messed with DNA yet, but this is the second time sight alone excited me. Their POTP dinobot set drew me away from PE's cycle of adding "pretty darn adequate" to hasbro's "good enough".

I finally saw Dr. Wu's staff weapon for SS Grimlock. It's definitely a far better design but the lack of paint kinda sucks. If DNA can manage to paint this kit up nicely, it may be the winner. I do really like the add-on parts that really help the figure but realistically I'll be displaying Grimlock in bot mode most of the time and I'd display him with both the staff and mace hand at the same time anyway. Plus I'm concerned about how well the pose-able hands of this kit will be able to hold his staff. Ntm Dr. Wu's kit is about half the price. I guess I'll just wait until we get more accurate pictures of the final product and maybe some hands-on reviews before I make my decision either way.
