There was no such thing as a deal breaker to me back then. Sure I had to make choices over one toy or another due to limited money, but toys being bricks, too gimmicky or "ugly" just never came into it. Not until G2 anyway.

Well, I can’t say anything that isn’t new or interesting about this.

This is the first time since getting back into TF's following on the '07 movie (and discovering the TF presence in toon form) that I have zero interest in buying toys associated with a cartoon iteration. Either I'm over it or these designs feel like the laziest interpretation ever. Probably bits of both.

That's pretty weird. There were a lot of garbage G1 toys. And all the kids I knew could tell a good toy from a bad one.

Nobody I knew was a Transformers completist (mostly because it was impossible). Unlike MOTUC, Star Wars, or GIJOE, Transformers (and other transforming robot toys) had such a wide degree of variation. Almost every toy was a new mold with different merits and flaws. Assuming that "buying everything" wasn't an option, you -had- to develop a critical hierarchy.

I was born in 1981 so was too young for the 1984 debut. I became a fan about five years old. And I didn't have a critical hierarchy. Throttlebots, Firecons, Pretenders, Triggerbots, Action Masters - I welcomed all of them. G2 was the start of myself becoming critical of Transformers, the toys didn't look good to me. It bothered me that Optimus Prime had become a long nosed cab with flames - long before everybody else thought the same way in 2007. Car Robots Black Convoy was an amazing repaint that I just had to have though. It was the colors that looked bad to me, not the mold itself. Although there were some G2 molds that did look cheap and too blocky even for a G1 fan.

I think so much of the appeal for us kids and parents regarding Transformers and GIJoe in the 80's were born out of "something else".

Transformers (and Gobots) looked like diecast cars. This appealed to kids (they looked high end) and to parents (diecast metal cars were equal to "quality make" back then).

GIJoe had the appeal of toy soldiers AND model kits (you had to build and sticker the vehicles).

This was coupled with a very intelligently implemented marketing campaign that could sell the toys on the strength of the fiction-wrapped advertising.

    Sooooooo....

What does Cyberverse have to offer that will make it the sensation that Transformers and GIJoe were in 1984? Obviously, we can't go there again...but the product then capitalized on the trends of its day. What is Cyberverse capitalizing on? Nostalgia? Is that alone enough? Because if these were offered to me back when I was 7 years old, I wouldn't be a Transformers fan right now. So, what is appealing about these for today's 7 year olds?

Toy based trending, though, would have us believe NERF and building block toys are the best sellers...at least, from what I can tell.

I think Block Town would preform well in today's toy climate.

Age may have something to do with it, and G2 might have been right around the point when you started thinking about whether something is "good" or not... a combination of unfamiliar change (G2) and burgeoning taste.

I don't remember ever not having an opinion about how my toys compared to each other. I mean, like any kid, I made the most of what I had... some stuff was just worse than other stuff. I could tell when I was dealing with off-brand MOTU figures because the molding didn't look right.

Like, I knew Ram-Man sucked, a figure ruined by his gimmick. I loved Blackstar figures because they were a head taller than MOTU figures, came with a minion, and often had more weapons... and cost a few dollars less.

Upon my first exposure to transforming robot toys, I realized I disliked GoBots Cy-Kill because he required parts-forming and a spare engine piece for bike mode. Super Gobots looked stupid with their windshield heads compared to similar-sized Autobot Cars. For the same reason, I never got Ironhide or Ratchet.

I remember one year, I struck all the GIJOE stuff off my Christmas list, because I was tired of their thumbs breaking, leaving me with a grip-less karate chop brigade who couldn't hold their accessories (the first 2 years of Joes used a more brittle plastic for the forearms - this was fixed in later waves).

And I used to chat with friends all the time about what was cool... what was not so cool. It also helped that I lived in a small enough city that I could often visit stores by myself (or with buddies) after school, so we actually got to see and compare what was out there (as opposed to just watching commercials)...

god awful toys. thank god I no longer collect anything from the main lines anymore. just terrible.

I'm really missing the TF Animated and TF Prime aesthetics big time now. Wow how far they've fallen.

die cast gives enough heft to a transformers toy to make it an excellent bludgeoning club for when your sibling pisses you off.

I mean, they're good toys for their intended audience at the very least, I don't think Hasbro gives a damn what collectors think of this line

Y'all do know that the toy safety laws have changed a lot since 1984. Today's 8 and up was 84's 5 and up. I blame all those Gen X teens that had children while they were in high school and did not know how toy look after their own children, and allowed to eat four Happy Meals in one sitting then left them alone to try and eat their toys.
