Great episode, gave me a lot to chew on during my commute. It's interesting to me that there is a bit of a cycle to listener questions that runs with the toy cycle. I hadn't noticed it until the gimmick listener question came up again. It's probably me being greedy but the biggest gimmick I want back is base modes for leader figures (on top of the current evolution gimmick). I am still having fun with the base modes from Titans Return and changing my modular city with Titan figures and leader figures, I am dissappointed that we have the Prime masters but they aren't well integrated in the larger size classes. Deluxes and Voyagers combine, Legens are still little vehicles, and Leaders have Master pegs in alt mode, it would have been the cherry on top to have a couple extra transformations to make the leader exosuits be bases. On the topic of expected repaints. I always thought that we would have gotten more repaints of Titan figures. Like Gran Max now, I expected Takaratomy mall to have done Metrotitan and Brave Max (especially since we got Ruination). I also expected (and really hoped) that G2 Devastator was part of the CW G2 wave, I had plans to set him up with TFC Hercules and give him Super Saiyan 3 hair... Other than that it's a bit tough to think of expected repaints since the Prime Trilogy has been so good at using repaints and crazy retools to get the most out of their molds. I do still want that grey TR Kup though, such a good generic body for Titanmasters, especially since we aren't getting those third party exosuits and storage container/gun platforms anymore. The other listener question that discussed the crazy price for a Beastwars toy reminded me of something I saw this weekend. I was trying to grab some spare CW limbs for customs and Reprolabels conversions and was very surprised by the prices I saw online. CW Prowl and CW Wheeljack (who I thought would be cheaper than retail with the reception he and Smokescreen got regarding paint) are sitting at $40+ on eBay. I was really thinking I could grab them loose for $10-15, maybe I am just not aware of the demand for those guys... Especially since they aren't from G1 combiner teams. And I did get the G2 stunticon team as a whole for $50, it doesn't make sense to me. Always good to hear fans come out strong for inclusion. Well said all around, one thing I have done is (on the rare occasion) that I have seen it on the boards is reach out in support to any fans fighting the good fight. While I don't have the patience to deal with ignorance like that myself for more than a reply or two, I do want to make sure the fans that are trying to confront/educate/debate exclusionary fans don't feel like they are alone.
Hey I'm super glad you love your stowaways I threw in! Though I can assure you the crays that I threw in are not that old, they're from sometime in 2014 to present more than likely from freebies. I guess I need to get off my butt and work on those eBay listings now!
I would have figured the even team were the monsterbots since 1. TJ really likes the monsterbots and 2. there's three of you.
As far as expected but ultimately undelivered repaints: Blue Deluxe Beast Hunters Smokescreen and Generations Cyber Shark
Great Episode, and the false editor bit, remind me at time with I was mistake as someone else by some random guy.
Oh Man, legends godbomber. Mine took long enough for the horror stories (and the gift box) to dampen my enjoyment. Perfect Effect's sets do a lot for the team, especially that partsform block, but then I start thinking about how many layers of purchases this took to be satisfying. On the topic of expected repaints, I have to go third party, I was certain Master Made was going to make an Apollo in Spreem colors, at least a limited run. He works so well; the hands, the proportions (large head actually works) the fact amidst generations or masterpiece he'd be a freaking small ''titan". To date I just say Apollo is Spreem. Sick of the non-status of Action Master Elite, he slunk home and joined the family business.
Thanks for answering my questions guys! When I said team Duocons and Monsterbots, I meant Vangelus and Seth are the Duocons and Vangelus, Aaron and TJ are the Monsterbots. Hopefully I inspired some ideas for gimmicks in Transformers.
The RFID troop command idea was actually done fairly well for the Justice league line, with some of the action figures being able to banter by detecting the other members
Oh man! I was so expecting G1 redeco of Prime Smokescreen as a TFCC exclusive at some point! I still have that Prime Smokescreen, I like the mold but I would love to represent him with a more traditional color scheme in my collection.
Takara did release the Combat Hero Megatron in purple in their G2 toyline as Megatron. The purple choice is also to tie it in with Beast Wars Megatron.
The Tolerance discussion has come up a lot of times throughout a lot of media and its quite timely but think about Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's creation of Black Panther. Black Panther was created in an era where the main demographic of comic readers were mainly young white American kids and is now a respected aspect of the Marvel Mythos along with many other characters of diverse backgrounds. However I do get the sense that sometimes Media companies try to one-up each other with their push for diversity and it comes off as "pandering". I use the example of Marvel's Astonishing X-Men #51 or "The Gay Wedding" issue where Northstar who was already established as a respectable gay character was tying the knot. The issue wasn't the marriage, the "issue" was it felt very tied in with the zeitgeist at the time, with In Life with Archie #16 actually beating out both Marvel and DC with this milestone. Hence the timing/aggressive marketing of the topic might come off as "pandering" to some. I'm an old timey DC Comics guy with a more or less moderate Muslim upbringing. I saw that times have changed and some of my personal beliefs conflict with some of my comic book reading like in Starman (by Tony Harris and James Robinson, highly recommended by the way) where Mikaal Tomas had an open relationship with another man. I saw how pre-New 52 Alan Scott (The OG Green Lantern) had a son Obsidian who was gay and Alan Scott himself is now an LGBT character post-New 52. Long and short of it, its something I grew to understand and accept. I still have some grievances on the subject like how Marvel has made Iceman gay (which, c'mon you know was mainly for shock value). Heck I am Muslim but I detest Simon Baz Green Lantern for being such a crap character.
For me, I'm still perplexed that we never got the "blue" G1 Bluestreak all the way back when the reissue era was in full swing. That and G1 Artfire. I still hold out hope, however faint it may be....
Thank you TJ for bringing up Transformers 2007 70's camero bumblebee's breaking! I still remember owning one and going mad trying to transform it back into car mode (following the instructions carefully) and not understanding what I did wrong...and just giving up figuring it broke ...F-that toy!!! Gah!!!
For what it's worth, I have the Nendoroids of both Tracer and Mei and both have full articulation in their arms and legs. Tracer does have an alternate leg for running poses, but she has fully working tiny shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles.
