is it just me that’s noticing this or have a lot of people been selling big chunks of their chug etc collection to go to masterpiece.

I love classics (probably more than masterpiece) but my point is... well is masterpiece gonna take over?
    What do you think

Well, Masterpieces are getting a lot more expensive. I don't think there's any "taking over" though. CHUG is still pretty huge right now.

With the cost of MPs nowadays, you'll have to sell plenty of CHUGs to recoup the cost.

    Depends.

If you can affords all lines and can afford space...

Lastly, people would also advertise that they are selling their collection but, in fact, they sell you their doubles, triples quadruples etc. People are more likely to buy from a fellow collector

I think that shift started a few years ago. I sold off my entire collection (600+ bots) around 2013 and it was mostly G1 and Classics figures. I gave good deals but still made more than I had paid for everything by a fair margin.

Flash forward a couple of years and MP is where it's at. In 2015 I started an MP collection and just got a few CHUG style figures here and there. But then last year I decided to ditch my MP figures and refocus on Classics again and I've been able to pick up a ton of old figures that I had sold for top dollar for total bargains.

I don' t Classics will go away but it does seem that many collectors' focus has switched to Masterpiece.

Masterpiece is way to expensive to replace the cheaper chug figures. People just like to get newer figs of there favorite characters. Plus they might need the money.

G1 is a exception. In general, old always get sold off. Some people just rotate their collections like that. And it's a different time now. As rare as some classics may seem to be there were still plenty produced and Hasbro is re-updating/re-releasing a bunch of characters every couple of years now.

Toys should never be treated as a pure investments anyways but if you still insist on doing it then wait until Bay truly runs the franchise into the ground and hope the post-Bay reboot kicks tailpipe.

What's happening is that the Classics line became a sticker-plastered budget Masterpiece line under John Warden's control, and the fans with money in the bank realized there's no point in collecting both. The line's original direction has been steered into a ditch, and let's not forget the falling quality, rising prices, and gimmicks absolutely ruining the appearance of Galvatron and a sizable chunk of Power of the Primes.

Nah. I prefer the Classics look to MP. MP may be light years ahead in terms of engineering but is 30 years behind in terms of aesthetics, especially now. Classics is 'new', MP is just 'updated'.

    Y'know. IMO.

Oh no the 34 year old franchise will be destroyed by one person, because it’s clearly as fragile as 2 cinderblocks tied together with a piece of thread

I like both lines of figures but yeah they are getting very pricey that much is sure. I've been collecting the retail lines but masterpiece has had to take a backseat for awhile. Now don't get me wrong i like the masterpiece but i think the price needs to come down on the MP's. I want more of them cause I'm missing alot of the current cause I've been buying the retail line. Hopefully i can collect alot more this year and somewhat come close to being caught up.

Masterpiece is a totally different direction than Classics. I will never fully collect Masterpieces. Size is the main problem with that. They are too big. And you will never have so many characters like with Classics. Unless you buy counterfeits by 3rd parties. But even then it will take an eternity.

I would never sell my collection and start over with something different. I never understood that mindset. That would have been totally pointless. Why invest money in something only to sell it later?

Are you talking about old chug or prime wars chug?
Because a lot of people have sold of their old chug because many of those characters are being redone in the Prime wars toylines.

Classics will never die!! I can grab 10 bots and have a good time. Can’t really do that with my mp. They are good to fap to. You grab one or two of them fiddle with them. It’s not the same.

Mecheon's always here, with you. My fellow CHUG collectors

MP line still does nothing for me and just bores me (Though I wouldn't mind a new, better Sideswipe)

It could also be collectors selling large portions of their Classics collections as newer and much better versions of the same characters are released in the latest Classics lines.

Heh. The MISB Classics Prime price i paid this past week says otherwise. Classics still commands a big price tag on the net. Especially Combiner Wars and Japanese Henkei.

Classics/Generations has to be made to be affordable to sell at nationwide big chain retailers like Walmart and Target, while Masterpiece is really only available online and at (sadly dying) TRU. But Classics has also managed to cover a LOT more ground than MP ever will, and due to being far more widely available than MP it is going to last for a long time yet.
