    Haven't seen the movie yet.

I've always had a feeling that the Knights of Ren where in the past. They followed Kylo because of his lineage, they did some horrible stuff and when it caught up to them only Kylo got to walk because his family.

Appreciate the discussion! While I loved the movie, I don't know what all I am going to get toy wise. I really just like Stormtroopers and tie pilots, so as non existent as the executioners we're I think I'll pick them.

I do appreciate Seth's incite on Snoke in the EU, I fell out of the books a while ago (really only likes X-wing and I, Jedi) but I figured Disney would develop movie characters outside the films. It seem like an off move but it is very much a Star Wars tradition.

I left the film feeling super empty and disappointed. I do think it's funny that when I voice my disappointment everyone says it's because my theories didn't pan out. XD (Though I really love Vangelus's take on Snoke and it really makes his Goldmember outfit work). My problem was how the Resistance stuff was structured. Casino Planet is (REMEMBER THE CANTINA, BECAUSE I DO) this nexus of weird structuring issues. I think it all could have worked, but I think people needed to sit down with those pieces and make sure things flowed. Holdo's sacrifice was great visually, but some of the back and forth with Poe feels like the script treading water, why does Holdo keep her plan secret? Command structure? (When has that mattered to Leia exactly? Also how many times does Poe have to learn to be reckless?) I know why these things happen- Script Reasons, which is why they bug me so much (that and more or less wasting Benicio Del Toro). Everybody brings up the Luke stuff and lore and honestly I just have a problem with the film as a film.

oh, and Rose releasing the Weird Harry Potter Horse and saying "Now it's worth it.." while there are enslaved children back at the stables. >_>

My response to the "well the Emperor was just a guy we knew nothing about originally" argument is that we knew everything we needed to know by his name. They fought the Empire, Palpatine was THE Emperor. Clearly he was a powerful guy to be in charge of the group that controlled the galaxy.

Snoke just never received the same build up, unless you read some tie in book you not only don't know where he came from but also what the First Order actually is. And without that they just aren't that threatening and read like a poor man's Galactic Empire. You really shouldn't have to read a novel first before watching the movies in order to enjoy them, but right now as it stands we have the 2nd and 3rd movie in the new trilogy but there's still an entire first movie's worth of backstory we're missing about the events that occurred between the original trilogy and these new movies.

I kept saying that the casino planet felt like something out of Doctor Who (which is a show I enjoy), but you saying it felt like something out of the prequels hits the nail on the head! That entire story could be cut and I would have been fine.
I wish we got more Phasma. I really wanted more of her!

My personal worry is that this trilogy is going to leave us with a bunch of unanswered questions. Since thus far, the movies seem to suggest something is important but then ignore it.

I mean I wouldn't be suprised if we never learn more about Snoke. Same goes for the thing under Luke's island. I'm not confident we'll ever learn why Rey is so adept at the force or why Obi Wan contacted her in that force vision.

I mean, the original trilogy never explained the cave Yoda sent Luke into. *shurg* I don't know. I wouldn't be surprised if they intentionally leave somethings open ended to give themselves an excuse to sell books and comics.

True enough, but in the context of these movies it feels like they're coming up with things that are supposed to be big mysteries that they intend to reveal without actually thinking of what they plan to reveal.

It's like having a huge murder mystery with plenty of red herrings, forensic scenes finally explaining that the guy just had a heart attack without explanation how that was missed previously. Sure it feels exciting in the middle of the story, but the ending just can't pull off all the build up successfully.
