The last thread of this type was several years ago so I decided to start a new one. What is your occupation? I studied political science but never eventuated as a career. Worked at a distribution centre as a logistics personnel for a major grocery retailer for many years. One of the perks was free stuff, especially from damaged/crushed boxes. Recently changed jobs & now work as a process operator for a large manufacturing company.
Lead Art Handler/ Exhibitions Technician for a local contemporary art museum, and Shop Assistant/ Installer for a local vinyl graphics guy. Also professional Artist.
When I saw the above I thought for a moment that this was a thread for describing how your career "transformed." For example, I have a degree in Journalism but ended up in IT - first general then management then migrating into a more communications related role with web sites and mobile apps.
I work for a company who builds axles for another car company. I'm a qualitt inspector. I inspect rear axles as they come off the assembly line and constantly told I get in the way and am treated a nuisance by a lot of the upper people. I have to get up at 3:30 am to get to work and don't get home till 6 pm and have to go to sleep by 8. I hate it because it consumes my life but the money is good and it's only a temp postion. IE They won't hire me on after 90 days. I try my best to get along with all the other line workers, but the work is so monotonous I have no choice but to socialize when I can to pass the time.
Active duty military, lead (now that my immediate boss just transferred to Hawaii) server administrator and IT tech.
Middle School History Teacher And 2 nights a week - Mechanic for a factory, repairing printing presses and poly converters (for turning sheets of plastic into bags).
Sanitation for a food manufacturing plant. They make baby food, MREs, sauces/meals for a large company, etc. I clean one of the cook kettles along with 2-3 other giant mixers and the electric pumps used to pump the food. Lot of work sometimes. Some times it is easy and it is a sauce with nothing in it, other times it is a pasta or rice dish and i spend a lot of time sweeping that stuff off the floor. Pay is ok, but working third shift sucks.
I was a cashier for LOWES for 5 years. I actually really enjoyed it and being I was 1 of maybe 4 guys that worked with 15 girls the job had it's perks for actually meeting people. I'm now a trailer/film editor.
Service IT Specialist for Guardian Protection. I work with cameras and access systems mostly. Occasionally, they'll send me to work on an alarm system. I spend half my day stuck in Pittsburgh traffic.
I'm a customer service Trainer for a Dish call center. I teach agents basic customer service, general tech, advanced tech, and broadband/dsl troubleshooting. It's like I'm a teacher but I get paid more!
I knew this job wouldn't last forever, but I walked in today after working there a month and they told us the contract expires today. They KNEW this but yet, not even a 2-day notice. Fuck them. Current occupation: jobless.
Environmental scientist for a consulting firm. I work outdoors a lot monitoring wetlands (counting trees, identifying grass species, etc.), collecting GPS data, and taking water samples. Also write reports and do some mild data analysis.
