In anticipation of both my X2 kits, the future release of PE's Core Magnus, and your awesome part swap I decided to get out my versions and do a little work on them. I have to paint on both the waists and I will have to paint the forearms on the US kit blue but otherwise I am ready for everything to get here! Core Magnus will be going to the toy ispired deco.

 

Hmm, with the perfect effect kit, I'm pretty tempted with this - sort of. The things that bother me most about magnus are the feet and that I'd rather have a G1 chestplate (totally understand others are cool with the IDW one though), with the poor weapon grip a close third. But... the x2 kit doesn't sound perfect - the back of the legs can't close up with the stock feet (plus foot 'implants') in place there, is that right? And I don't really like how the x2 shins look, or that the kit makes the alt mode look a bit crap.

And in the perfect effect side, I'm in two minds about magnus having an inner prime - on the one hand it doesn't fit with my vision of him, on the other, it's pretty cool from a toy point of view. And if I'm not fussed about the robot, it's a pretty expensive way to get a update G1 chest (which probably doesn't work with the stock cab anyway)!

Don't mean to sound like I'm complaining about that fact that there are options, but just not sure what, if anything, to go for...

 

I love mine. Got the kit installed minus the back and head. The back legs not closing is annoying, but I love mine overall. Looking forward to the core Magnus add on. I must love Magnus a lot to spend this much on upgrading him lol

 

Here are my partswapped Ultra Magnuses. Platinum Autobot Heroes on the left, with stripped metallic paint, custom painted chest, Takara legs, and my Shapeways arm wheel parts. Takara on the right, with X2Toys forearms and Autobot Heroes legs. Basically IDW on the left, and G1-ish on the right.

 

Excellent job, Process! Your side by side pic comparison only substantiate my loving to the right side custom UM/ G1 toon color & style more than the IDW version, lol. The forearm wheel and especially the red thigh kill it for me. I'm also not a fan of the dual missile, they look just too big for his shoulder.

Anyhow, with the X2Toys add on gun, these 2 UM will look complete. Surprisingly, the gun is the only thing I love from this X2Toys kit. The rest of the add on is useless for me.

 

got the face/head replacements from this kit if anyone is interested...japanese version. Didn't see where they were much different from the original. Holla at ya boy.

 

I spent a couple of hours doing some part-swapping between the Hasbro Platinum Heroes Magnus and the Takara Legends Magnus, as well as parts from X2's upgrade kits and this is what I've come up with:



(On the left is my "Lost Light" Magnus, with the original cab and without the X2 feet and shins. It's mostly the Platinum figure. I'll probably add the X2 feet and shins since he seems a bit short next to MMC Tyrantron, but I wanted to show part of the height difference between the two.

On the right is my "G1" Magnus, with the full X2 kit and with the PC-17 upgraded cab and chest. It's mostly the Takara Legends, but the crotch plate is from the Hasbro Platinum Magnus, which I feel looks MUCH better with the PE chest's color layout than the Legends figure's original crotch. As you can see, between the two upgrade kits he stands a fair bit taller than a stock Magnus (particularly as far as head height goes; most of that is due to the PE cab).

Both figures have the X2 hands and forearms because this mold is trash without 'em.)

My only major gripe about the PE kit is that they went with the two different tones of blue on their chest to try to match all versions of the mold, but I don't know if it bugs me enough to try to repaint it; it's not as glaringly obvious in-hand as it appears in photographs.

(I have to give due credit to @process for making me start experimenting with parts-swapping between the two version of the mold.)

 

I like this! They're both different enough I can actually make use of that X2 head with the mouthplate and make these 2 distinct characters:

Takara Legends version w/ PC-17 and mouthplated X2 head is original Magnus, Platinum Hasbro version with Minimus Ambus is the current armor Magnus.

 

One bonus of using the X2 kit with PC-17 is it makes flipping the head back to change faces MUCH easier.

Probably never? The compatible figures probably won't see a re-release any time soon so there's very little market for the kit.

I have some various parts from the kit left over. If anyone has the original Shins from the LG version of ultra Magnus I may be inclined to sell or trade some of the parts from the kit.
