Agreed on both counts. Dinobot's voice is terrible and really takes away from my enjoyment of the character.

Contrary to most fans, I hated Beast Wars when I first saw it but liked Beast Machines.

I wasn't sure if Primal and Megatron were meant to be their G1 namesake.
I thought the whiney voiced Scorponok was an insult to the Marvel comics version.

Didn't like the animalistic heads and faces on Waspinator and Tigatron.

Rattrap was all kinds of wrong to me. From his grating voice, his buck teeth in bot mode and his obnoxious personality.

I wasn't into Transformers then though in my early 20s. A few years later when Dreamwave and the G1 reissues enticed me back in, I picked up a Beast Wars Spittor with an episode of Season 2 on video.

Gave it a look and it didn't seem too bad. Picked up a 7 episode DVD with a text back story tying the Beasties into the Marvel G1/2 comics.

Those 7 episodes started with Agenda running into the Depth Charge 2 parter. I loved it. Megatron finding the Ark and Ravage appearing...I hadn't been so excited about a Transformer cartoon since seeing the 86 movie in the cinema when I was 11.

I ended up buying all 3 seasons and loved it.

There are great characters in there. My favourites were Megatron, Inferno and Silverbolt. Terrorsaur too.

I still don't like Rattrap though he is written well as a character since he's meant to be an asshole.

Dinobot too, though the voice is crap.

Actually they're all good characters apart from the other annoying bot, Quickstrike.

Anyway, Beast Wars is well worth a chance and this is coming from someone who hated it initially.

    ......... No.
Good god, no. I'm all for keeping the hype train at bay & recognizing Beast Wars' stumbles, but Energon is far & away one of the single worst TF shows I've ever seen. To say they're both basically of the same quality is like saying all food is the same, because it all turns to poop.
    Just no.

It may look pretty, but I've always hated Akira.

It is probably the best incarnation of the Transformers ever. The major thing holding it back is its animation, although revolutionary at the time, it gets worse as technology evolves.

It had the most solid writing of and TF series to date.

Season 1 was twice the length of the other seasons so it has the typical filler episodes, and since it was season 1 they are still finding their footing.
Seasons 2 and 3 are solid. Most episodes hold up very well to this day.

It also has some of the most epic season enders.

Also the characters actually take Damage. You see missing limbs and holes in body parts.

Also has Rampage the Hannibal Lecter of transformers. Though it had comedy, the series could get pretty dark at times as well.

For its time, mid 90s it was brilliant. The depth of characters, plots and sub plots was unparalleled when you compare to alternatives like Samurai Pizza Cats, Bucky O'Hare and Animaniacs. It was a massive step up in the Transformers universe and the shallow repetitive plots of the 80s cartoons.

Ok so it wasn't The Batman or X Men level of awesomeness.......but hey can't win them all.

The toys were a big step up in articulation too and I guess it's era was driven by the Jurassic Park success and frenzy.

Yes, you have to actually watch the series. Just looking it up on TFwiki doesn't do it justice. The story and character development is better than any other Transformers series ever made.

Just as an example, Cheetor, the yellow kid friendly character of the series, if the only character ever written in a Transformers series that actually matures in a realistic natural way. Hot Rod magically matures instandly when he becomes Rodimus Prime. Hot Shot matures over a time gap between Armada and Energon and then goes back to immature self in Cybertron. Many other characters just stay immature forever. Cheetor is the only one who actually feels like a developing character.

Not only that but on rewatch I find I only like the series more. The only thing bad I can say about it is that the animation does not hold up. Would really like an updated version with modern animation.

While I agree on everything, I failed ever to register Cheetor both as friendly kid character, and having a maturity cycle. Perhaps in Beast Machines, but by that time I was so annoyed with him, I ignored him. Then again I might be one of the few that view it this way, so....

Animaniacs was so subversively awesome. You need to watch that show again to see how much of the humour would have gone over its intended audience's heads.

"Hey, Beast Wars might not be (X), but it was miles better than other '90s shows like like (Y) and Transformers cartoons like (Z)."

    "Don't be dissin' on (Y)!"
"C'mon, (Z) is totally underrated! You just don't know how to watch it right!"
"(X) sucks. Beast Wars kicks its ass."

I just want to note on the topic of the animation: yes, it's dated. The low-res textures and character models can seem very jarring if you didn't grow up with it, but in spite of those limitations, I still find the characters in Beast Wars to be some of the most expressive Transformers ever animated in CG. More than the movies, more than Prime. Mainframe worked with the technology they had and stuffed the actions and facial expressions so full of character.

Animaniacs was Marx Brothers for 90s kids and I mean that in the most reverent and loving way possible.
