SD on Blu? Depending how it's done, the results could be interesting. The TF DVDs suffer from some horrible compression (esp S2 &3) so just eliminating that would improve the overall PQ. I've been deconstructing and remaking scenes from the G1 toon for my YT vids, and even within a single shot you'll get a massive variation in quality. A lot of the soft frames, blemishes and instability are inherited from the film source, so will probably always be there (unless the original film negs were found and rescanned, which seems very unlikely), but digital artifacts from the DVD process are widespread too. Check out these two frames (taken from the same shot):

On Blu-ray, both should look like the one on the right. There are more obvious examples, but this just happens to be what I'm working on at the moment (I take the best looking frame and use that as a constant background).
    Here's a more dramatic example:

I agree, the marketing of a SD series on Blu is vital. I love seeing vintage tv in HD (Trek, Twilight Zone, The Prisoner etc) but there are releases that feel like a cheat, such as the Doctor Who TVM you mention (somebody who didn't know that the original film negs are lost might have bought the BR reasonably expecting a HD version). Similarly, while Thunderbirds and UFO look spectacular on Blu-ray, Gerry Anderson's Terrahawks recently got a HD release which looks barely up to what you might expect from a standard DVD (an improvement over the old DVD release of the series, sure, but only because that looked like a VHS transfer!).
As a final observation, the masters which were used for the DVDs will already be higher quality than what any of the disc releases have been, partly due to the aforementioned DVD compression. But also, for us in the UK, our PAL system means we already get a slightly better PQ than the US NTSC release, for example.

Japanese versions on Blu in SD I'm not tempted by, but it would be nice to see the original uncompressed masters get a release one day.

Anyone have any idea how the video quality of this will be compared to the first season you can get on amazon? I'm thinking about ordering the first season digitally on there since the shout factory DVDs I have are just ok quality.

I was always wanted to hear the Japanese versions of season 1-3 to hear the voice actors.... was the intro and bumpers the same, as well as the music?

Still going through Blu Rays content, but here are some pics of the Blu-Rays, Boxset, and Booklets. I like how they included the 2 DVD Booklets that came with the DVD Releases.

Alright, went through the Blu-Rays, and there is a lot. Here is what is on each disc.

    Transformers (Seasons 1 & 2)
    Disc 1:
    Episodes 1-30
Season 1, 2 and Scramble City Commericials

    Disc 2:
    Episodes 31-65
Episodes 64 and 65 in English
    Scramble City
    Exciting Transformers 86 Documentary
    Mystery of Convoy Promo

    Transformers 2010 (Season 3)
    Disc 3:
    Episodes 1-30
    The Rebirth (in Japanese) 1-3
    The Rebirth (in English) 1-3
    Transformers 2010 Commercials

Each Disc has options to show the Episodes with Opening/Ending Credits or watch it seamlessly without them. As far as quality goes, it shows. This is presented in 480p with Japanese Dolby Digital 2 Channel at 48 Hz. The English episodes are English Dolby Digital 2 Channel at 48 HZ as well. So the real question is, is it worth it? As a die hard collector of the TV show and love seeing the Japanese Version, it is to me. But to the normal consumer (outside of Japan) it might not be, since it is essentially all of the episodes of Japanese G1 on 3 Blu-Rays. The Blu-Rays are All-Region so they can be played on any Blu-Ray Player. On the price point though, the individual Japanese DVD Box Sets cost way more than this set. Please enjoy the screenshots below and let me know your thoughts.

Wow. 30-35 episodes on one disc... I'm guessing there's little to no improvement in PQ over the DVDs, with so much squeezed on there? The BR format might iron out a few digital artifacts, but no overall clarity gain.

Thanks for posting these. How's the quality for the Scramble City: The Mobilization episode? Pretty much the same quality that we've seen in past releases with washed out colors, etc?

If I could the Japanese version of the movie as well then I would order the set now. I hope they release something soon.
Any idea what the difference is between the limited and regular version? The description did show anything different.

The only thing here that's really of interest to me is the way they way presented it and it is some nice presentation.

How come they get Japanese translations for the American cartoons but all we get is crappy subtitles for headmasters, masterforce, and zone?

Because the Japanese dub was recorded 30 years ago, it's nothing new.

Scramble City is the same quality. I was hoping it would have been better as well.

The original DVD release of Transformers 2010 did have the Movie in it, but other than that, you would have to buy it separately.

Glad I could help. I plan on getting more of the Japanese DVDs/Blu-Rays, so I'll continue to share what i get.
