No, he'd have gotten a toy anyway simply by being one of the three new Decepticon Targetmasters. Appearing in the IDW comics wouldn't have been a factor.

Now I want MMC to tackle the Scavengers. Looking at all those repaints just makes me sad.

Its Flywheels since Flywheels was a part of the Scavenger team in the IDW comics but didn't get a body of his own.

Let's not miss the point though. Without the added popularity spike of IDW, Misfire would be purely a perfunctory release... checking a box because Has/Tak is finally scraping out the dregs in the 1987 barrel. It's good for completists, and for fans who actually -owned- a Misfire toy in their childhood. But before IDW, I will assert that nobody was ever excited about Misfire, especially not the G1 cartoon version. He was an utter nobody. :)

So credit where credit is due. IDW made Misfire a somebody. Considering what they've already done with Rewind and Chromedome and Tailgate and Brainstorm and Springer, among others, doing a toy/IDW Misfire option head just seems like good practice.

Triggerhappy, Misfire and Slugslinger were all done, and Misfire doesn't resemble his IDW self. His release has nothing to do with IDW and was a simple case from moving from the 1987 Headmasters to the 1987 Targetmasters (for the Deluxe class anyway). I think they chose to do all three Decepticon Targetmasters as Misfire and Slugslinger could be remolds of Triggerhappy. And no, fans didn't need to be excited about Misfire from the old cartoon or comics. So yeah, it pretty much was just checking a box for having done the Decepticon Targetmasters.

Right and Rodimus/Kup/Blurr were probably picked to fill the Autobot Targetmaster side besides being TFTM characters.

Krok probably got some help from his IDW appearances to get a new toy in TR though imo.

Who would they have otherwise repainted Skullcruncher into?

They didn't have to repaint Skullsmasher though. They could have done one of the other Deluxes.

I held out hope for a long time that Skullcruncher would be tooled into Grotesque. A different tail, some wings and the panther head instead of the croc...it might have worked. I can't post a link yet, but tfwiki has a great piece of character are that just screams "make me from Skullcruncher!"

I actually thought Wolfwire might make a decent Grotusque too.

He could have easily been a repaint of Blurr/Brainstorm, it would have served the G! character better. and been a stronger figure to boot.

THANK YOU. Oh, well. Maybe when Weijiang gets that far along with their OS TR figures they'll do him up with a toy head (which was how I first knew the figure, then IDW) and get my money.
I had been hoping to see the Autobot clones using that mould actually. Short of the Thrilling 30 Springer mould I'm not sure there is one that could cover them (other then doing what they did and making them Legends).
That's a good idea! I think this is the pic he's talking about, I could totally see Skullcrunch as Grotesque now.

Blurr's been repainted several times. It wouldn't be worth it.

Exactly. Just what I said. So if they're just checking a box for its own sake, why not actually throw a bone to the fans and do a visor-less Misfire, just as they've peppered the preceding lines with IDW references? I understand peoples' disappointment, since this is probably the only time anyone's every been potentially excited about Misfire as a character.

Too many times even. I'm still sort of amazed they didn't do Brainstorm from the Triggerhappy base. Would have been much better overall. Blurr isn't even a great choice for Arcee or Nautica, for that matter.

I'm surprised we never got a Blitzwing retool with Flywheels' head tbh.

Probably so Takara doesn't have to remold the toy so that it is cartoon accurate as it would already be cartoon accurate.

Probably because Triggerhappy had yet to be released at the time they wanted to do Brainstorm. Plus Brainstorm was the first remold of Blurr so it was okay at the time.

To be honest I like Brainstorm more than I like Blurr. Nautica might have been a bridge too far though, and I don't even know what to say about the upcoming Arcee..

Probably because Hasbro has been planning those POTP Duocon Sets. If we are talking Funpub any potential ideas were likely vetoed by Hasbro because of their TR Head.
