would you prefer lions and tigers? the point I was trying to make was that we categorise everything but when its applied to humans people go nuts. why ? we are all animals whats the difference between comparing different races of humans to different races of animals? its divergent paths taken from the same stock no better no worse.

the topic is about changing an established character who was white, late thirties, widower, single father, rich, roboticist into a character that was black early twenties, single, no kids, middle class, and a soldier. my stance throughout this whole thing has been respect the source material and make new characters rather than changing the old ones

Funny how no one has really had an issue with any of those other changes until confronted about it.

Funny how no one has posted in-hand pics yet. For such a high-profile and hotly debated set, it doesn't seem popular or interesting enough for anybody to actually show it off.

Keep in mind we are on a transformers board and the only transformer in the set is one many people have had since 2013. That and it's not available on hasbrotoyshop yet so the majority haven't even had access to buy it yet

Since I only had badges for Thursday and Sunday, I figured I'd use the downtime to post pictures and a first impression review. Bear in mind that I don't have a damn clue who any of the characters aside from Jetfire are, so my impressions are based solely on in-package looks, and that I won't be opening this until after the weekend.

First off, I'd like to point out that this was one of, if not THE slowest moving exclusive at the Hasbro booth, and was limit 2 per customer. Not surprising, considering the Star Wars and MTG sets were everyone's main priority. That being said, the packaging is actually really nice. Figures are well-presented and if space isn't an issue, a nice display for MISB collectors.

Having both the Takara Legends and this SDCC Jetfire in hand, unless the jet mode is drastically different, both figures are nearly identical in robot mode. Anyone considering buying this set solely for the Jetfire should not purchase it, and instead opt for the Takara figure. For what it is though, it's a major improvement over the Thrilling 30 figure, as there isn't anymore worry of chrome chipping.

From what I can see from screenshots of the Visionaries cartoon and the vintage figure, Leoric looks like a nice modernization, with clean foil labels on the chest and staff.

The Dire Wraith seems to be based on its appearance in the Revolution comics, and it's nicely molded.

Roadblock is based on his GI Joe: Renegades design, which is weird because in his appearance in Revolution, he didn't sport mutton chops.

ROM might be my favorite from this set based on appearance alone. Not worth buying the set for, but still a great looking figure.

Action Man is definitely based on his IDW incarnation. Head sculpt is a little funky, and he's definitely the weakest figure in the set IMO.

Honestly, I REALLY don't care about the ethnicity of Matt Trakker, and this thread is a train wreck because of that controversy. It's a reboot, so things are bound to change. I'm just happy that MASK is getting some kind of recognition, and this might be my second favorite figure in this set, behind ROM.

For Micronauts/Microman fans, I'm sorry that your guys' only new figures are all SDCC exclusives. It's a shame, since these are nicely sculped and painted.

Overall, it's a nice set for a convention exclusive. I'd really only recommend it if you're really interested in at least half the set or you're a fan of either the 80's cartoons or the Revolution comic series.

VERY interesting. It occurs to me that a set like this is ideal market research for Hasbro to determine the level of fan interest in a shared universe. Theoretically the set would be popular among people who are fans of a greater balance of the represented properties, and not popular among people who are fans of only one or two of the represented properties. The price will keep away all but the core of the audience Hasbro is interested in reaching. The bigger that core is, theoretically the better the set would be selling and the more potentially successful the shared universe concept.

The apparent fact that the set isn't selling well tells me that there isn't a lot of crossover appeal in the fandom at large; I would interpret the sales data as suggesting most people are fans of only one or two of the represented properties and aren't willing to pay the high price for the set that is mostly filled with characters they don't care about.

And I would have strong reservations about pressing forward with the shared universe concept. But I know I'm in good company on that score.

Based on what I overhear from in-line conversations, everyone seemed to have that mentality. I could see Hasbro making so much more money at their booth if they had dedicated exclusives for each franchise, and each one including an issue from Revolution to promote the other sets. While I enjoy this set, I do feel like the pack-in comic doesn't do enough to explain the crossover.

You guys realize that making the stickers on Leoric holograms would've cost WAY TOO MUCH for a convention exclusive box set, right? Unless you're ready to shell out an extra $100 for the set.

And that's why that boat sink years ago with the Visionaries because of the cost of the Holograms...

"A lot of planning and research and development went into the production of this 3D rear transmission hologram (all the holograms featured in Visionaries are front lit, so the light source is in front of the sticker. With rear lit the light source is behind the hologram, allowing you (or a figure) to approach the hologram without effecting it)".

Here is a great article about the kind of Holograms used in the original line...
    Holograms

Holograms are highly advanced and scientific photographs that present pseudo-three dimensional images! Truly, they are the future. Visionaries was quite keen on them. Indeed, the entire line is built around them. They came in two types and were used in a variety of manners.

    Types
    Silver Holograms
    Black Holograms

I love those. Robocop 2's Cain featured a similar effect.
