I agree with you, it wouldn't be the best move to just do a shell, but at least they have the option and like you said to release the prime figure later. If they did go that way, we're basically talking about having an FT prime mold. Would fans go for that? A proper UM should have a white prime that matches red prime. Maybe FT should go for the knockoff of MP10 in white?

Well, there is an apparent demand for a new Optimus. Chasing the idea to a conclusion, a new Magnus could lead to a new Prime. To that, a new Prime could branch off an idea you mentioned of being MP compatible in regard to MP-10's trailer. That way, FT need only produce and sell the core unit. This way, they sell two, potentially three [Sentinel] versions of the cab robot abd two of the power armor. They'd also avoid having to produce a new hauler for their MP Prime.

Demand for a new op? Idk. All the TT collectors are clamouring for a "+" anime style op, but FT seems to be carrying the tradition of the Hasui style MPs forward. Would they completely trample that tradition by redoing the signature Hasui MP? I would almost rather they stay away from it and keep the role of continuing what he started, instead of risking reimaging it. I think once direct comparisons get too strong, people could get turned off to what FT has done and talk about their vision for the line instead of Hasui's.

One possible solution is to do a white prime that is more strongly magnus inspired, just to avoid comparisons. It's not a must that prime and magnus exactly match IMO, but having a detachable bot would still be a good homage without giving it a very strong prime likeness. I'm not sure if doing something totally new would be completely non-MP. Just a thought.

Sorry, just started reading a few pages ago. Is Hoodlum up for preorder anywhere? Saw him listed on TCP a few nights ago with a big fat "Not for sale" disclaimer.

 

We must be reading different board members opinions. The way I read it, FansToys isn't the second coming but the only definitive Masterpiece line out there taking on the cartoon likeness fans want. Or that could just be that one idiot from the FT constructicons thread.

Actually, what Hasui was shooting for was for people to have their Magnus cake and eat it too.
His original plan was for BOTH a vehicle-to-bot option as well as a vehicle-to-armored Optimus option, in a single toy. He said when he turned over the project he was well on his way but that it was coming out as both too expensive and too complex.

I think that for purposes of having something different to offer the market, a new 3P Magnus would have to go the armored Optimus route.


I'm still not sold on Hoodlum as a replacement for MP Hot Rod, but if they did a Shattered Glass or similar deco I'd be on it in a hearbeat.

 

That's been up for many months now, as TCP has a habit of doing that once in awhile. They've had FT Arcee listed in the same manner for a few weeks now at the very least.

 

If people think FTs makes toon style figures the way Takara is right now they aren't paying attention. FTs has always been toon based, but they take inspiration from the toys and other media as well. There are countless examples of non-toon inspired detailing, from chrome and translucent amber on their dibots, to the IDW inspired details on Spotter, to Grinder's crown (taken from the artwork in my sig), to many of the features on Terminus Giganticus coming directly from the G1 toy, etc. They also tend to make their figures more heroically proportioned than the toon.

 

Yep, agreed. I feel like DX9 is taking the 3P toon approach TT is currently doing. It was only a matter of time before that happened, but at least the "+" collectors have another line outside the main one.

As for the FT magnus discussion, it sounds like the only solution is to sneak into the TT offices, steal Hasui's original plans, release the armor and force TT to give us a white MP10.

Mp-10's days seem to be numbered. Especially with the mp-10b reissue.

Pf needs to take mp-10's level of detail and add articulation to it. Best prime ever

Maybe not, he's priced at Sunstreaker pricing, the re issue of Sideswipe is cheaper to reflect it's an older mold. The argument for sunstreakers price was due to the new starting point of hyper articulation & accessories.

chances are, you are right and it's Takara being greedy but releasing the old Sideswipe mold for a cheaper price re itterates that they think their old molds had lower value.

 

My guess is mp-40 will be hotrod toy colours plus the targetmaster
