Universal's Monster Movies Titled Dark Universe, Johnny Depp Joins Danny Elfman is a composer. That's awesome. I grew up on monsters,” Elfman said. “Monsters were my life, and these iconic Universal monsters were almost like my family. I simply wouldn’t be the same without them. When I got the opportunity to compose a theme for the Dark Universe logo, of course I jumped at it. What could be more fun than connecting to this world that has always been so deeply imbedded in my psyche? I tried to find something that was new but still had some connections with the past—the origins—at least in a subtle way. Something that was looking forward to a creative, fertile, imaginative future that Dark Universe will enter, and at the same time saluting the heritage of the tragic heroes (or anti-heroes) of my childhood. To the Monsters!!!!”
All I can think is Remember when Monster movies were supposed to be scary? I watch trailers for this and I want to laugh.
Its a cool concept with Jekyll and the hq is cool, however they could've done something a little bit more different then what feels to be a flimsy superhero team up of monsters. However the acting, take and writing are all things that to me are already hurting this movie, no, this cinematic universe. One that didn't even need to be, just make independant monster films again. This film makes Benicio Del Toro's wolfman, with all its lackluster faults still be a steady movie, look oscar worthy. In my opinion
This isn't meant to be a monster superhero universe since the organization Jekyell works with deals with hunting down monsters so if anything this has more in common with Legendary's Monsterverse in that regard with Monarch. Besides what's wrong with having a shared universe filled with monsters? It's been pretty much years since we've had that especially since in a way Universal first came up with the shared universe idea to begin with so if anything this is them going back to their roots. That's like saying superhero movies should not have a shared universe and it'd be a waste if Universal didn't at least attempts to have that again especially that he MCU helped made the concept popular again.
I wonder if they will cancel the entire universe when this bombs? I wish they would do an actual horror movie universe instead of an action based one. Why does everyone think a movie has to be action oriented to be good?
There's still some horror in this universe and it's the fact that the Universal monsters don't have the scare factor like they used to all these decades ago because well people now know what to expect from them.
That, and the horror genre never brings in the kind of cash that they're wanting to make. Practically all of the biggest horror icons were made on shoestring budgets, which is also what allowed them to be profitable.
I actually don't think it'll bomb. I'm not sure it will do exceedingly well or anything, but I have a feeling the budget was kept to number that would allow them to at least break even so they could still justify adding more installments to this "universe". Still, it's going to be a hard sell. Tom Cruise being Tom Cruise aka borderline box office poison over the past decade, a no name director, and it being a reboot of a franchise most people would never miss it never came around again. They have their work cut out of them... which they must know considering they're basically releasing the entire movie online in snippets. Because easy to please Basic Bros outnumber horror fans 100 to 1, and if crap like Bayformers and Fast & Furious's are anything to go by - which they sadly are - that's the recipe to go with.
But it gets boring after awhile, which they will come to learn. People are already feeling burnt out by the shared universe due to the Marvel movies, so adding another action oriented shared universe is not doing them any favors. You're right, horror movies made money because they were cheap to make. Horror movies could still be cheap to make if they actually relied on actors and practical effects instead of the biggest CGI'd explosions and monster imaginable.
Ugh. I've been getting beaten to death with commercials for this lately. Not interested in the slightest.
DARK UNIVERSE Reportedly Wants The Rock For THE WOLFMAN & Angelina Jolie For BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN Really? A Samoan werewolf? I could see Jolie being a hot zombie lady though.
Well I didn't expected see the Rock as the Howl, or Angie as The Bride leaves of who is playing Frankenstein's creature and Dracula?
It's just rather weird IMO, I'm thinking of a werewolf rampaging around Polynesia and Hawaii. I meant no insult. I'm also aware that Dwayne Johnson is a big name nowadays and that's a major part of why they want him.
Neither Johnson or Jolie have actually been cast, and apparently are not even in negotiatons for the parts yet. Those are just two of the names that The Hollywood Reporter says Universal wants. Doesn't mean they'll get them... or that this rumor is even true. Javier Bardem has already been cast as Frankenstein's monster alongside Johnny Depp being cast as The Invisible Man.
