China Sets Release Dates for 'Pirates 5,' 'Transformers 5,' 'Wonder Woman,' More

Transformers: The Last Knight is set to crash into the Chinese marketplace on June 23. The preceding film in the Michael Bay-directed Paramount franchise earned a historic $330 million in China in 2014.

 

China will make this film money.

Remember this, people.

Either way, TLK will be fine worldwide. They have great huge markets in the UK, Europe, Africa and Australia/New Zealand.

 

Same date! Though I can watch it a bit earlier in China than in US because the time zone. Can't wait!

 

If Fast and Furious who is already 8 movies can break the record for the highest opening ever then there's no doubt TLK will be fine.

 

Well, fast and furious 8 has already earned 1300000000RMB in the first week in China.

 

Well Transformers is #1 movie of 2007, 2011, 2014 & #2 movie of 2009 (losing 2 millions to 2012) in China. It's basically China's Star Wars, so no doubt it will do huge numbers there.
What I'm interested in is, will it beat Furious 8? Furious 7 suddenly exploded & beat AOE but it's like Avatar beating all Star Wars movies until TFA come out. If TLK beat Furious 8 or making same number it will prove Transformers is the ultimate Hollywood franchise there. If it doesn't then we can say Furious takes the crown.
For exactly number I hope TLK does at least 2.5 billions RMB (~360 millions USD. AOE made 1.993 billions RMB)

 

My worry is not that its the fifth movie, its more that bad word of mouth could turn off people away, considering that lately blockbusters that got bad word of mouth, have made less money, Fast and Furious 8 has had mixed to positive word of mouth, which is the type of reception i hope TLK gets in order to bring more people.

 

If you're speaking just domestically, then yes, word of mouth reviews is something we should consider. The most recent trailer was received well publically, so I'd say we're off to a good start. However, if there is any domestic loss, I'm sure China will fill the void.

 

We dont need to worry about the word of mouth in China. AOE has 3.2x legs (99 millions openning/320 millions total) which mean it sure got good word of mouth.
Problemn is in US. AOE has 2.45x leg (100/245), which is considered average, not bad, despite of its horrible reviews. Word of mouth must have been decent. But it didn't have many competitors in summer 2014 like this year. To not get disappointed, 90 millions openning weekend with 2.3x legs to give 210 millions domestic total is fine with me. If the movie is good next one will increase.

What also helps TLK is that Josh Duhamel and Tyrese are back and that they were very much missed in AOE.

 

I don't know if the decision is made in Japan, I think it's Paramount spreading their earnings.

 

This year competition is tough in the States. We've got Guardians 2 and Wonder Woman vying for summer action flicks, and Pirates 5 has stepped up promotion to rake in fans after 2011's On Stranger Tides left a lot of people wanting more (I loved it, but to each his own). Transformers is going to have a hard summer ahead, but at least we can take solace in knowing we'll still have two other movies in the coming years to rake in more money if this one doesn't do as well as I hope.

 

China to celebrate 10th anniversary of 'Transformers' - China.org.cn

China will celebrate the 10th anniversary of Hollywood blockbuster franchise "Transformers," which has witnessed huge success in China in the past decade, top executives announced in Beijing on Thursday.

The 6 million votes in an online poll pointed to the city of Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, as the location to mark the anniversary, unveiled Jim Gianopulos, the new Paramount Pictures chairman, and Megan Colligan, the president of Paramount's worldwide marketing and distribution at a press conference held during the 7th Beijing International Film Festival.

Colligan thanked Chinese fans' support for the franchise as the previous four installments grossed 3.8 billion yuan (US$551.84 million) in China. The fourth installment, shot partly in China and starring Chinese star Han Geng and Li Bingbing, raked in 1.97 billion yuan (US$320 million) and was once the biggest grossing film ever in China until it was dethroned by later films like "Furious 7" and "Mermaid."

The worldwide total of the franchise reached US$3.8 billion.

Megan Colligan also revealed an exclusive long trailer of the new installment, "Transformers: The Last Knight," in front of Chinese press members and guests, featuring a typical Michael Bay styled explosion and robots fight on a grand scale. The new film will arrive in June alongside its brand new edition of Hasbro toys which will hit the market since April 28.

Paramount executives and Chinese film industry observers both expected the fifth installment to set new box office records in China.

Gianopulos also revealed there will be a standalone film about the Transformer character Bumble Bee coming next year.
