So how many repaints are there possible for dinobot including remolds? I count four different "main character" uses of the mold, dinobot, grimlock (bw and Walmart dinobot though both were USA only), thrustor and hardhead. Any other characters that could be done?

Maybe in the beginning but it was more like Hasbro's money they needed. Now Masterpiece is all Takara, from what i understand of their agreement Hasbro kind of "buys" the ability to sell Takara MPs. In the beginning yes' Hasbo's input was important as to what got made( the soundwave story, Hasbro wouldnt sign off at first because they thought kids wouldnt be entertained by a box) but now TT pretty much does what they want to do. Honestly, I don't know what Hasbro's designers do at this point. The Titans except maybe Metroplex were all Hasui and the new movie Bee is done by a guy from takara

Well, there's the main lines which are the biggest chunk of TFs. Generations, and don't forget the movies. Pretty sure there's more than a few Hasbro designers in there.

As for TakTom doing what they want, I don't doubt it really, but who's to say Hasbro would automatically be against TT doing whatever they want? I mean, Hasbro is still technically the main holder of Transformers, and I doubt they're not somehow involved in either decision or design.

 

Regardless the R&D on the Transformers brand as a whole is shared by Hasbro and TakaraTomy, they work together to releases the same or similar products in different markets. So its totally plausible that a Hasbro rep could have said "Third party Companies should not even be here", indeed if we are to believe the quote is verbatim they didn't even reference the MP line. Sure Hasbro are less hands on/concerned about the MP line right now but to assume they have no interest or involvement at all is a little naive. After all its as much there intellectual property as TT's, possibly more so. The MP figures are an available revenue stream for Hasbro, whether they chose to use it or not is another matter.

You forget that his raptor arms were actually pretty sizeable and functional when compared to Megatron's T-Rex stumps or the puny twigs they used for his original toy.

 

Ha...yeah...it was pretty early morning when I wrote that. Regardless the rest of my post stands, like Split Lip I'm sure Hasbro are involved in the R&D of the MP line, especially if they think they can put a particular mould out in the west. You also need to consider what the rep might have meant by 'our ideas', I've worked for a big corporation, employees will often refer to the actions of the corporation and it's partners as a whole as 'their' actions even if they personally have little to nothing to do with it. So do I think Hasbro could have said this? yes, Do I think they did? Maybe, do I think JediRodimus jumped in an told them off? I find that less likely.

 

Fair enough. My pov comes from the fact hasbro has only released 10 distinct molds and 19 figures total with several repeat characters in their version of the masterpiece line, the most recent new mold being bumblebee (released by hasbro in 2016) and the mold was nearly two years old. Takara on the other hand has somewhere in the ballpark of 25-30 distinct molds (not sure on accurate numbers) and somewhere in the ballpark of 50 releases. I find it hard to believe the practicality of hasbro funding so many molds that they aren't using, from a corporate standpoint what sense does that make?

Do people not realize Takara developes their own molds seperate from hasbro at times? Unite warriors blastoff and grove for example, arms micron breakdown and Gaia unicron are two more. Hasbro and Takara may share developement costs in broad strokes, but they aren't as tied at the hip as some people seem to be claiming either

 

Maybe I've missed something? but no one is arguing that...right? The point is Hasbro are likely involved in, or at the very least consulted on, MP research and development. They may not be putting as much money in the pot and may not be interested in/intending to release them in the west but I imagine they have a seat at the table should they want it.

Yes they do However they are the exceptions not the rule.

Again no one....well at least I'm no arguing that, only that they are co-owners of the franchise and as such both have a vested interest in what is done with it within and without their respective markets. My point revolves around (the rather derailing) comment that a Hasbro rep made a flippant comment regarding 3rd parties and MP ideas, as this has nothing to do with MP Dinobot maybe we should just drop it  

 

I think you and I are pretty much on the same page, just wording things differently   so how tall is everyone estimating dinobot is going to be? Primal was 7.5 cm right?

 

Not even close. If you meant inches then I think that's more accurate. Primal is 19cm and from scale discussions we're assuming Dinobot will be at least 23cm but he's one instance where I certainly wouldn't mind a little oversizing. The bigger the better! As long as when Megs comes out he's even bigger!

Yeah, some stuff is still shared but I know MPs are Takara, most of the really big Generations products( were for the most part Hasui they may have brought him in to work with their designers but he gets all the credit for it. As far as the movies I dont know how much is shared but I whatevers Hasui title is now it pretty much includes movie and other big items. I only know this because some people felt he got demoted and but in essence it just meant he was running all the non-mp big items.
