I assure you, it was not meant as an insult.

Though I suppose you're right, there are differences. This great piece ended up credited to its artist, after all.

I thought the same thing. He's in that "powering through a turd" half squat that we always saw from Dreamwave too.

    It is amazing work though!!

This is how detailed Unicron COULD have looked like in the old Movie Cartoon.

Unicron when he appeared in Armada to be honest was pretty detailed too.

Wow great work. It makes me kind of miss the old Dreamwave books.

The storytelling was meh here and there but the art works were always on point and just about each series/issues looked like they were out out of animation.

Yes. This is how it's done! As a planet sized transformer Unicron should not look like a small appliance. This character is a universe spanning force of nature and should exhibit all of the magnificent grandeur that this awesome illustration perfectly captures. He is the embodiment of epic destruction and should look every bit as enormous and overwhelming as possible. His greebles should have greebles. As a kid I remember watching the OG '86 movie and marveling at that opening scene-if only the entire movie could've displayed that same level of hyper-detail as planet Unicron comes sweeping across the screen.
This drawing-or rather James Raiz-does a masterful job of achieving that level of artistic excellence. I love how despite the insane level of detail, each section of Unicron is perfectly readable while preserving his distinguished silhouette. Keep 'em coming Raiz! Awesome work!

I'm actually pretty familiar with Raiz's work.

He did so much stuff in the past.

This contained some of the best work from him.
(too bad it never went anywhere after the first issue)

Staring at his line art is just amazing. :)

he's made a ton of Transformers Prints/Posters and comic inserts in the past. Here's 1 of his best:

Damn, that's so cool. I want to see that in color.

The Unicron artwork is impressive too, of course :D

I saw the Metroplex and Unicron pieces in person at Fan Expo Toronto this last fall. Truly phenomenal and the pictures don't do them justice.

Yeah I wished that series went somewhere. I still have issue stored someplace. The only thing I wish was that some of the old Dreamwave series would go digital, because many of them, even outside of TFs are difficult to track down. I thought IDW had acquired the publishing rights to some of the old DW stuff but I guess not. I'm pretty certain they did put out a couple of trades of Armada and Energon some years back. Because Riaz worked on Armada.

I haven't seen Transformers artwork this good since Don Figueroa and I am a huge fan of that man's work. Ironically my avatar is Don's drawing of Unicron. Look's like James Raiz just earned himself a new fan.

And back then I was wondering why the style of that issue was so familiar... James Raiz did art for the first issues of Dreamwave's Armada series! :D
It was weird realizing how things sort of came full circle with my TF comics.

High five, mister! Don did the rest of the art of that Armada comic. Say what you will about Dreamwave as a corporation or the quality of their plots, but I think their adaptation of Armada was far better than that anime and it was my gateway drug into the entire TF hobby.

What's sad is that when Raiz was working on MTMTE a few years back there was so many complaints about this 'new guy' on the book. A real shame as he's not only been working on TF books since Dreamwave but had also done a huge amount of covers for IDW too.

I love his work and would love to see more of it!
