You might even catch a peek of GM’s top designer, Ed Welburn, who filmed a speaking part for the action movie directed by Michael Bay. “My office in 15 minutes,” a generally calm Welburn, appearing to be angry, says to the film’s star Mark Wahlberg in a clip that hits theaters June 27. “I think you know where that is.” Welburn, who is GM’s vice president of global design, said he spent a day filming the scene in GM’s Design Dome. He said he was worried it would end up on the cutting-room floor, but the last he heard, it’s still in the movie. Crews from the movie spent a few weeks last summer filming at the GM Tech Center, converting Welburn’s famed design office into an office for the Central Intelligence Agency. “All my car stuff was gone,” he recalls. “Every book, every paper was all CIA documents.” Scenes also were shot in GM’s Design Center lobby and staircase, the executive garage at the design and in the design center’s Virtual Realty studio, which is typically used to communicate with GM’s design studios across the globe. Filming also took place in the company’s aerodynamics lab and climatic wind tunnels and at an entrance gate at the Tech Center. Scenes also were shot on GM’s Proving Ground track in Milford and at GM’s Lansing Delta Township plant. GM and the “Transformers” movie empire have a long history, with vehicles featured in each of Bay’s four movies. This time around, Bay and Welburn met in late 2012 to consider what vehicles could be used in the upcoming movie. Welburn’s office — which originally was Harley Earl’s office — today still features a CIA logo on the wall. He said he also got to keep a mug used in the filming. Nice, you know nothing about cars, but nice. I hope Ed Welburn is in it, the man has an eye for good lines. Now if more of that was devoted to things rear wheel drive and not front wheel drive I would appreciate it more.
Diaclone / Transformers started in *JAPAN*. *EUROPE* took over Transformers after the U.S. Neither of them gets any recognition in any TF movie. Every time I hear something new about TF4, it makes me PROMISE not to see it when I am home in July. Marketed to low life China, locations for China, cars for China, Dinobots changed to Dragons for China. Now a GM exec gets a speaking line instead of one of the 30 year fans? Makes me SICK to my stomach.
Uh-Oh. Shitstorm a brewin. I see no problem with GM's designer getting a cameo considering many of the cars from the movie series are from GM. Its a cameo so he'll be gone in a minute or so.
Here, here! Though I think it's cool to have one of GM's top designers appear in the movie, I think it'd be great to see Peter Cullen on screen! He made a cameo already in the comics, but I'd like to see him in the TF movie(s)! XP
