So the world is dying of a disease picked up by birds in the arctic, and the plan of the government is to send two scientists to find the "primordial strain" of the disease, by taking snow samples from where the birds eat - eat snow, I guess.

I don't know about you, but I'm REALLY tired of this fake sci-fi theory that in order to cure a disease someone needs to find samples of the original strain or the first infected patient. It's total crap scientifically. If a virus mutated, you need to cure THAT version, not it's ancestor. I think I've seen it in about a dozen movies and TV shows now. It's clearly a case of writers:

    1. Not knowing a thing about science.
    2. Copying each other's ideas.

Hate to break it to you, but you don't cure a cold by getting blood sample of the first man with a cold.

I remember thinking how BS this idea was in a zombie movie I saw 10 years ago... they had to find the first zombie to make a cure...? Everyone just keeps borrowing this idea. I need to find the first movie that came up with this idea and kill it so I can cure the other movies it spawned.

How many "unnamed refueling stations" does the US Navy have exactly? Shouldn't they all be manned? What's the purpose of unmanned fuel?

The dropping of the one female character making a comment about missing her girlfriend was about as subtle as a bag of hammers, and served NO PURPOSE except to say "Look! We have a lesbian character! We're progressive writers!"

Does no one on that ship know how to properly change a high voltage fuse?

Oh, and one of the cast is a traitor with a secret agenda that we drop in the last 10 seconds of the pilot. That was predictable.

On the plus side - They have the man named Jayne.

got to agree with you. mind you its better than the certan plant that grows on this 1 place and blooms once every 78437 yrars for 99.999999th of a second and that is today and it can cure the world Thrush problem.

Its Amusing, but I would've preferred sticking with the Book Version instead of going with a Virus...

From the looks of things the writers are the sort that want to make social comments on the events of the day. I don't think I'll last on this show.

Anyone else watch the old 1970's British TV series Survivors? Also about the survivors of a super flu. Much better.

So did you just sleep through the part where the say exactly why they need the primordial sample? The virus had been mutated into a more stable form by human intervention (not natural random mutation). The primordial sample was to understand what changes were made. And finding the older forms of viruses that affect animals is something that's done.

As for how many unmanned ground refueling stations the US navy has? Zero, the show made them up. The fact that one is in France is a big tip off. France banned any and all permanent foreign military presence on their territory when they left the integrated NATO command structure in the mid sixties. And really because they changed this from the books 80's nuclear war to a modern super virus pandemic they could have just had them go to US naval stations in Rota Spain, or Naples. In book they couldn't because those bases were nuked by the Soviets. It's also why the Russians are going to be the antagonists in the series.

The book is 100% better because in the book its not a global pandemic, but WW3 and the Nuclear exchange. In the Book WW3 however isn't just US Vs. Russia/ USSR- the whole planet is in Nuclear warfare.

And not to give away any spoliers, but without the nuke angle from the book, its going to be very very hard to get the sense that the book had. just my opinion. I having a feeling that somehow AUTEC ( Altantic Underwater Testing and Evaluation Center -smack in the middle of the Bermuda triangle-Real)or another made up naval research facility will come into play IE that is how they will find their nuke fuel and spare parts.

Also as far as the Virus and the Mutated version of it.. the movie Outbreak does a decent job of showing how one must understand the basic biology of the cell before it mutated, so the mutation can be tracked and a reason for said mutation is given.

Maybe you missed the part where they spend 4 months looking for the primordial sample BEFORE going back and discovering that the virus has been altered by man. They didn't know it has been altered by man at the time they went to go get the sample. So my argument stands. The doctor already had the same from the early outbreak in the beginning of the show which was unaltered.

You track the origin of a disease so that you can see if anyone else was exposed to it and get the before it spreads, not to create cures.

I believe the fake science they used in Outbreak is that the antibodies in the monkey that carried the disease would somehow magically lead to Dustin Hoffman making a magical cure in less than than it takes to watch an episode of Simpsons. This is not how it works. At least this was about antibodies already existing, so it's somewhat of a reach at reality.

You need a sample of the current version so of a flu to create a vaccine, not last year's strain. It's all made up.

Ok you did sleep through, got it. The man made strain is what killed half the human race. The scientist lady was studying the new virus and looking for it origins. And that means the point where it mutated enough to cross from animals to humans.

She never said it mutated from the form found in the ice, just that it was passed along from ice to bird to man.

Well, just saw episode 2 and the complete and utter lack of realism for the sake of action continues.

It's amazing to see a world where a ship full of people on the ocean running out of food to eat, and hasn't seemed to try.. I don't know... FISHING! I mean this is the military in an emergency situation. Drop a grenade in a school of tuna for crying out loud! Dinner is served.

Also, the magic blood pressure cuff was hilarious. you put it on someone's arm, and it just reads their systolic pressure on the gauge, and goes up and down as their pressure changes. Much easier than normal cuffs that you need pump it up and take measurements. Also, amazing how removing the bullet is what they try, and it makes the blood pressure RISE. If you remove a bullet, it opens more holes. Probably would have been better to put pressure on it and get him back to the ship.

So, this episode much had been written before Obama let the worst of the worst in Gitmo go a couple weeks ago.

BTW - Too bad the hospital they were in had no oxygen. That might have been useful in a situation where they were running out of air, you know?

Realism on this show is so far out there it isn't funny. I thought when you watch TV shows there is supposed to be some "suspension of belief". This is almost Bad Science Fiction....

They lost me when the Captain said "The Lab (at Mayport NAS) is hundreds of miles inland!" NAS Mayport is in Florida, and the only thing "Hundreds of Miles" inland from the Atlantic Coast of Florida is either Alabama or the Gulf of Mexico! Mayport is actually right on the Coast, at the inlet of the St.Johns River.....

The whole Disease thing I can work with since obviously they had to make it up, but to mess up things that can't be made up is just stupid......

One of the possible reasons may be intentional- this series has full DOD and US Navy support. NS Mayport just happens to be close enough to NAS Cecil Field, which housed and is still rumored to house Nuclear weapons in an undated underground facility.

Cecil Field Yellow Water Nuclear Weapons Storage Facility Decommissioned

Plus NS Mayport is converting to birth a next Gen Carrier in the next few years, as well as birthing the the Marine Amphibious Transport Dock, New York ( A mini Carrier for harrier Jets and Marine AAVs in addition to a light Regiment of SOCOM Marines)

Sometimes when working with the military, if you want their support certain locations have to either be "moved" or not acknowledged. Best example I can think of is ID4, Independence Day. The Movie had received full DOD support prior to the full script reveal. Once area 51 was mentioned the DoD said either remove it, or we pull support. You know what happened.

I've lost interest in keeping up with the show. Falling Skies is also becoming a slight turd.

I honestly have to question the intelligence of the ship's commander.

We have a situation where one woman seems to have a CHANCE of saving the entire human population from an incurable disease.

The stop to pick up supplies in an area where they might encounter the disease, and they do fun into escape terrorists who want to shoot them.

One of his men gets shot, and they send THE ONE WOMAN WHO MIGHT SAVE THE PLANET to pull out the bullet and apply pressure to the wound.

Seriously, tell that woman to stay put on the ship, we will bring the wounded man to you! You don't risk the woman who may be the key to stopping the extinction of human kind by sending her into a fire zone to patch up a man's shoulder!

Well, I was wondering if there was a discussion thread for the Last Ship... seems like it's be torpedoed and sunken b4 it got to the 2nd episode. :lol

I enjoy the 'action' aspect of the show, not much of anything else on... I like the actors for the most part as well.

Now..as for the science and the story... it's very far-fetched to me, not saying it's impossible....but as hotly debated, it's just not a scenario that would likely play out IRL.

I'm actually watching to see how many more crew members they lose each week. Folks will continue to lose their minds and be stupid I'm sure. :lol
