DC Chief Diane Nelson On WONDER WOMAN Plans; 5 Characters She Thinks Deserve Movies

"We have to get her right, we have to. She is such an icon for both genders and all ages and for people who love the original TV show and people who read the comics now. I think one of the biggest challenges at the company is getting that right on any size screen. The reasons why are probably pretty subjective: She doesn't have the single, clear, compelling story that everyone knows and recognizes. There are lots of facets to Wonder Woman, and I think the key is, how do you get the right facet for that right medium? What you do in TV has to be different than what you do in features. She has been, since I started, one of the top three priorities for DC and for Warner Bros. We are still trying right now, but she's tricky."

I thought WW would be straightforward enough: a (divinely empowered) warrior woman who lived on an island of Greco-Roman Amazon warriors, who meets a man for the first time and enters modern civilization. Sort of a combination of the 2009 animated film and the current DC Wonder Woman comics.

The only issue is finding someone good enough for the role of Wonder Woman. As she is the greatest female superhero ever, it needs someone on the level of Christopher Reeve, Bill Bixby and Lynda Carter; someone who can be badass and vulnerable and sexy and feminine all at once. That sort of casting is very difficult, but once that's sorted out all the rest should fall in place.

They've been working at this one for quite a while....maybe one day we'll get to see something.....in the meantime they'll make more MOS, etc.

As long as Christopher Nolan has nothing to do with this film, all is well.

I think this is the hard part. Having real Gods like Athena is completely against what other movies are doing (it seems unrealistic and silly). Even Thor has been explained to actually be an alien. Living on an island that no one has found for some reason works for Black Panther and Wakanda (advanced tech yo), but I'm not sure how it'll work for Wonder Woman.

I also personally believe an island of amazonian women meeting men for the first time isn't a great concept.

I'm pretty good with DC characters but I only know Aquaman and Justice League out of those 5
But with Man of Steel succeeding and Green Lantern failing Wonder Woman movie will break the tie and is very crucial.
Is only Gina Carano was taller!!!

Well, what's the difference? To the common man they're still Gods, just because they aren't actually human is kind of redundant. DC has plenty of other characters who work on behalf of or are empowered by Gods, Captain Marvel for instance.

As for "it seems unrealistic and silly", well, how so? How is Aliens any more believable than ancient Gods?

    Because magic, yo?

Then don't use it. Use the DCAU origin idea that she left Thymiscira of her own volition to help the world. In the animated movie, Hyppolita had a magic mirror that allowed her to view the outside world. Despite what dickweeds on the Internet tell me, women still suffer in the world. I see no reason why Diana can't come in to champion their cause in places where it still needs championing.

You're confusing Christopher with Jonathan; and Person of Interest (while awesome) is a completely different tone to Wonder Woman....although Jim Caviezel would make a badass Steve Trevor.

Nonsense with whoopsy on top! The man has talent, I dig that, his Batman movies were pretty good, Man of Steel was good with some flaws (and the editor and/or story writer needed a slap) but I really don't think he can get into Wonder Woman's headspace, women in his movies come across as weird.

One thing this movie will need; is a creative team willing to let Wonder Woman take a hit and make mistakes. She fights differently to Superman and Batman: Superman more or less stands in front of his enemey and stares them down sternly, Batman breaks their bones in the dark: Diana stands in the middle of the road with a sword and shield saying "Come and have a go if you think your hard enough". She's kind, but never forget she was raised in a warrior culture; if seperating your head from your body is the swiftest resolution to a problem, she's got the stones and the mentality to do it.

Another big thing is the costume; I love a classic, and in JLU it looks great, but even its New52 itteration (so far that I read) has been pretty ordinary. And the less said about that abomination in the failed Live Action TV show the better.

I'm gonna post this again, because I still think it's the best design that utilises classic cues but looks like armour.

I wonder (heh) if Morrison's Wonder Woman: Earth One could make for a good adaption. Not that I think WB will be fast tracking WW, but they should probably check to see what ol' G-Mo has in store for the character, first.

Still, the general premise is pretty solid: Wonder Woman comes to "Man's World" in it's time of need. It's that simple. The specifics of how much to show of Themyscira, how to show it and the Amazonian culture (if at all), and which origin to give Diana -- those are the tougher choices.

Superman is the Sci-Fi Super-Hero -- he and his threats (in MOS) come from another world. Wonder Woman can be that, but for the magic/mystic/mythic world.

If there's any hope for a Justice League movie, a Wonder Woman movie and perhaps a World's Finest would have to come first. Of course Batman would have to be rebooted yet again and be just as edgy. The Big Bad of a Wondie movie would most likely be Ares. It would be pretty cool if Lynda Carter would be casted to play Hippolyta.

My hope is still for MOS2 --> Superman/Batman "World's Finest" (introduce New Bats here; establish SM/BM friendship/dynamic) --> Superman/Batman/Wonder Woman "Trinity" (introduce WW here; establish SM/BM/WW friendship/dynamic).

I think it's important to establish how the three of them work together, first, before the League movie. That way, they can take a leadership role in the league, but then move out of the way and give the other Leaguers a moment to shine.

They could do the WW movie first, but I get the feeling that WB is still very nervous about that. If Wondy shares screentime first, it might be less of a risk.

Didn't Joss Weadon already write a script? Maybe they should just film that.

Nah. WB execs know about Whedon. Unpopular films, doesn't know how to make a comic book movie. /sarcasm

Basically, the suits don't know their elbow from their ass on comic book movies. The same types that were going to give us "Superman Lives" with the giant spider - the thread on the development of that canceled movie is very informative - and kept Sentinels out of X3 - because giant robots are silly, not cool, and would never work in film - and classic Galactus out of Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. But mystified as they are, they are happy to take our money, as long as they can dismiss us as fanboys.

In so much as I enjoyed 'The Avengers', I'm not really sure if Whedon's the fit for Wonder Woman. I just have these horrible visions of Diana talking and acting like Buffy, which just makes me want to vomit. I think a collaboration between good screen writers and a couple of Wonder Women's better comic writers like Gail Simone, Greg Rucka and George Perez (mortal status pending) for example to hammer out a balance between the required framework and what's feasible on screen.

Since she is one of the big three DC characters (At least for me with Superman and Batman) she need her own live action theatrical movies i mean come on already! Characters like Jonah Hex and Green Lantern have had movies although both did not succeed. Its time to give us the final of the bug three DC
