    Well, fantasy, hmmm....

Off the top of my head, I'd rate Rise of the Guardians as my favourite fantasy film. It's easily my second-favourite film ever :D

Lord of the Rings, Clash of the Titans (preferably the original and Wrath of the Titans), Excalibur, Conan the Barbarian (original), Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter, Pan's Labyrinth.

Fantasy is a weird genre for me. I don't watch a lot of fantasy movies outside the big ones, but I have read hundreds of fantasy books. My favorite fantasy book would easily be the Percy Jackson/Heroes of Olympus series.

Sounds like a classic fantasy flick.

My all-time favorite is Fellowship of the Ring. I love the entire trilogy but Boromir's death scene totally won me over, the most awesome death scene ever in my opinion. Before that came out my favorite was Empire Strikes back. I love me some Star Wars too.

I'm not sure half the movies the OP listed are even considered fantasy.

When I think "fantasy" I typically think of "Swords & Sorcery," with something like "Star Wars" being "Sci-Fi Fantasy/Space Opera."

So, my fav "fantasy/swords & sorcery" series is actually Berserk. I've enjoyed the 2 "Golden Age" movies, but obviously the Manga, and even the old series, is a bit better.

And yes I did just go through this entire list as a potential waste of time to express my thoughts on the OPs classification of what a Fantasy film is, and I probably missed some that I have no foreknowledge on, since I haven't seen a good chunk of some of these movies.

Still, I needed to kill twenty minutes and felt like doing it here.

Personally, some of those films on his list are pretty damn good Fantasy titles, I've already seen An Unexpected Gathering twice and can't wait for the Extended Edition.

If there was any film not listed there that was an actual Fantasy I could add, I'd have to say... Dungeons and Dragons, it might not have been 100% accurate to the source material and the effects are a joke, but I think it was a pretty fun summer flick. And if Hollywood could ever find someone to properly showcase the series, like Jackson has done for LotR I'd certainly like Dragonlance to make it into film one of these days.

The new Chronicles of Narnia Films were also quite enjoyable.

Let's not be to harsh with Hordak, at least's his thread title indirectly links his true subject matter with something that came out in the 21th century.

No, definitely not the Will Smith movie. This one is definitely fantasy, and pretty awesome, at least visually. You should definitely check it out.

Actually, this was the Kurt Russell movie. It did have some mystical elements, but yeah, I still wouldn't call it fantasy in the typical sense.

well technically, any movie that is fiction can be counted as fantasy...

and star wars has WAY more in common with movies like lord of the rings, then it does with star trek.

it's more fantasy, then scifi. or at least it used to be before lucas decided to change it.

and water world IS a fantasy.

fantasy doesn't have to be things like lord of the rings, or dungeons and dragons.

fantasy can be anything you dream up. there for, any thing that is fiction, is fantasy.

I'm sorry, but in a medium where Genre is determined by a group of people (The Academy, or whoever it is.) then yes, to say everything is Fantasy is wrong in that context. You wouldn't go up to someone and say 'hey there pal, that new John Wayne film was a great Fantasy.' John Wayne specialized in Western and War Films, Military War, not Fantasy War, the same for Clint Eastwood Spaghetti Westerns, they are not fantasies. Nor can ever be considered Fantasy films.

Star Wars has Space Ships, Aliens and other Planets, therefore it is Science-Fiction, it can not lay claim to being a Fantasy film even if the Jedi are meant to be Modern Day Wizards and Yoda is a Muppet. (Technically speaking.)

You can fantasize about being a Jedi, you can fantasize about Orion slave girls all you want, you can dream up anything under the sun like a five-armed, sixty razor sharped toothed assault beast that plays a banjo, sure that's a Fantasy. Stick it into a film about aliens, or a Drama about a Mid-Life Crisis and it isn't going to be classifed as a Fantasy Genre film. (And now I want to see a Drama about a Mid-Life Crisis five-armed, sixty razor sharped toothed assault beast that plays the banjo... Do you think Pixar would go for something like that?)

One can challenge the Hollywood Genre Police with a spanning epic Horror filled gore fest, full of zombie elves and necromantic dwarves, razing society to the ground in a modern New York setting. That won't make them re-classify films of the past who challenged genres, it'll just make them cook up a new Genre for that specific title.

Well Big Trouble in Little China is a mix of action-adventure-comedy-fantasy together.

Hey Scrapper, some of these movies are cult movies you know and some you never heard of because they are cult movies and you know what a cult movie is?

And some of these movies are childhood faves of mine.
