Boy I hope they don't do to Baxter in the movie what they did in the 2003 series. Not that I didn't like what they did, it's just that with Bay's name attached to it, people are really going to read into it being racist. Heck, even the 2003 series itself was cutting it uncomfortably close. If you've never seen it Spoiler Shedder would basically treat Baxter as little more then a slave. And when he'd fail, he'd not only have him beaten, but horribly mutilated to the point of being a one eyed brain in a jar toward to the end of one of the seasons.
I still have faith in the movie. I don't really care if they're aliens even if it goes against the name.
Yep, I wonder how many Turtle fans know that in the original, all of them had red bandanas? Really, all this working up is just nonsense. It's Optimus Prime and his flames and long nose all over again.
More like TAiNT, as in... Nah, too easy. But the Turtles themselves have been the same throughout many years. Teenage. MUTANT. Ninja. TURTLES. Now, if the ooze that mutated them was alien in origin, that's fine, I can live with that. But making them aliens outright is just a stupid, stupid, stupid idea.
Really? The Turtles have remained the same throughout the years? You're really going there? And if you're referring to Ninja. No where has anyone said that they won't be Ninja in this movie. Prowl is a NINJA from Cybertron. Now you're just jumping to conclusions. And I thought making Splinter a HUMAN was stupid. He was a Rat. Multi-colored Bandanas? Stupid! Initials on their belts?? Childish. Shredder being a pansy! Really Stupid. Raph was crude and rude? No, no he wasn't. He was an asshole, and his brothers were always having to deal with his attitude, especially Leo. To a Comic fan, this change was a hellovalot more drastic and stupid than anything Bay has said. Hamato's story was moving and emotional, and it was completely ignored. The TMNT became childish and stupid when the cartoon aired. This was after seeing them tear through HUMAN foot soldiers, and prowl the dark alleys and rooftops. I'm not playing the "Not a true fan card" because people who use that are stupid. But you can't claim shenanigans on this very-overblown statement that Bay Made, when your introduction to the TMNT was a cartoon. Because you have no idea how annoying that cartoon was to someone who expected it to at least try to match the comic (if not in violence, then in content). I still have an old soft spot for the cartoon, but that's because I love all TMNT (except the third movie). Trust me, I can quote that cartoon. But it is nothing like the comic. As in, "someone took liberties... a lot of liberties." At this point, more than Bay seems to have taken.
Actually of all the lost in translation that happened between comic and cartoon, this is the one that actually made sense to do. It may not seem like much, but when you're characters are moving around at the clip they do in TMNT, a quick easy visual cue helps to tell what the blue blazes is going on. Is the 80's cartoon a bit of a ball whack to original comic fans, yeah, it is. TMNT2003 almost seems like an apology to them since they did the same thing the first movie did: kept what worked about the cartoon like the coloured bandanas, Mikey being the surfer dude, Donnie being the tech/mechanic and took the best aspects of the comic that the could get away with: Shredder became a badass for the first time in years, The Foot Clan actually seemed like a criminal empire and allowed Raph to be as close to an asshole as children's TV allows. Its weird, I keep coming back to the first TMNT movie as an example of how a good live action adaptation of an seemingly absurd concept is done: yes, there are Mutant Ninja Turtles kicking the shit out of dudes and living in a sewer. Yes, they are fiends for Pizza, skateboarding and listening to rock and roll. Yet when Raphael has a bad day (losing his sai, getting his butt kicked by Casey Jones AND called a freak) and comes home angry....his father is there waiting for him. Splinter consoles his (obviously distraught) son with firm but wise words of love and support. At this point, the Turtles stop being costumes that kick butt, and become living, breathing characters.
I agree about the Bandanas. I thought it was stupid back then, but I always understood why. The initials is another story. I think the first TMNT did an amazing job of blending the two. Amazing. Splinter looked bloody amazing. Did you notice Raph is crying in that scene you described? So genuine and natural. But my favorite movie moment was in the 2006 TMNT movie when Leo and Raph are fighting. I had been waiting ages (Since Return to New York comic) to see that done well. Total aside. For the last 20ish years, my cousins and I quote a line from that first TMNT movie every time we play Trivial Pursuit. "What Russian Novel, embracing over 1000 characters, is set in the Napoleonic war?" Every time. Naturally, that's not what's written on the little card, we've simply been quoting that line for years. But this year, for my cousin's birthday, we played Trivia, and my cousin's eyes lit up when he picked out a card. He looked at me and said, "you won't believe the question on the card." Sure enough, it was War and Peace, and the question was very similar. Speaking of Trivia: To this day the first TMNT movie is the film I have seen the most times in the theater. I watched it 20 times, before it finally came to home video.
I'm embarassed to admit this, but I never really watched the 2003 series. Has it been collected on DVD yet? I saw some of it -and I always liked what I saw but I just never picked it up. Lies and falsehoods. It's Beverly Hills Chihuahua and you know it. I'm splitting hairs, but it was more like the team quit and Raph kept going. And yes, that fight between Raph and Leo in the rain was beyond incredible. Not only the cool things like the raindrops, but the looks of rage, hurt, and also love that the turtles were able to convey -while kicking ass on the rooftops.
They sell them as individual seasons, but not one big box. And they are SOOOO worth it. Especially the first 3 seasons. They're all good. But the first three may as well be the comic come to life. These guys even gave Usagi some much-needed love. The Battle Nexus Mini was awesome!
First off, when I meant that the Turtles were the same, I meant that, no matter what continuity, they were still Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. You obviously didn't see the bold text that I put in my post. Second, if you're referring to ANIMATED Prowl, yes, he was a ninja from Cybertron. What's your point there? Is it that it doesn't matter if ninjitsu just happened to exist on both Earth and Cybertron? Sorry if I never read the comics. I wasn't born in the 80s. Yet, from what I'm seeing here, you're implying that you are using said card, ergo... I'm well aware of how annoying the original cartoon is by today's standards. So is the Transformers cartoon, but you don't see me complaining about it. I grew up with the cartoon, yes, but the most memory I have of the Turtles were the live-action films. Also, you seem to have missed another post how I clearly said that if the only thing ALIEN about the turtles Bay was going to reboot about was the mutagen that made them mutants, then I'd be okay with it. It's the idea of the Turtles being from ANOTHER PLANET is what I think is moronic.
The Director speaks out. Nice to see Kevin Eastman is involved in the film's development. Exclusive: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Director Addresses "Alien" Backlash - ComingSoon.net
Meh I'll guess I will hold out hope for a little bit longer, because I really do want to see the turtles back on the big screen. Also is he(the director of wrath of titans) offically signed on to direct? Cause I wasn't sure yet this article makes it sound pretty clear that it's yes.
Nope, I read it. I just think that it's still too early to tell whether space means Ninja, Mutant or none of the above. So you are still jumping to conclusions. And no, I am not playing the fan card, but it is still a very realistic fact, that without having experienced the comic books, this call of foul play falls on def ears because such origin-altering storylines have taken place in the past, and to a much larger degree, particularly since we really don't know what Bay's statement indicates. My point about Prowl is that, if they do happen to come from outter space, and land here as infant turtles, and are later taught Ninjistu, then the concept remains the same without affecting who the turtles are. And again, you might think that them being from space is moronic. But I thought Baxter turning into a fly, and Toka and Razar calling Shredder "Mamma" was flippin' the epitome of stupidity. Those were elements of the Cartoon and the Live Action movies (After Steve Barron left, anyway). The points I was trying to make weren't all directed towards you. Sorry that I used your quote as a springboard
