I'm not knowledgeable enough about volcanoes, but what you say does ring a bell. There are also several possibilites to explain the scene (small population, the type of star, the volcano could be linked to others...) that it doesn't bother me that much. The Enterprise falling to Earth on the other hand... Agreed. It also had to be one hell of nudge. It takes the Enterprise just a few minutes to cross over 300,000 km without engines. Again, the apollo capsule left the moon orbit using a single boost from the ships rocket booster and still needed three days to cross that distance. It's highly unlikely the Vengeance could've given a nudge big enough to accomplish this, not even taking into consideration that the Vengeance was at the moment incapable of said nudge. Further, the Vengeance also falls towards Earth and they didn't get a nudge from the Enterprise. The writers clearly intended for it to be the Earth's gravity, but either said "screw it for the drama" or were unaware that at 300,000+ km the Earth's gravity isn't strong enough. Considering their track record with incorrectly describing science, I think the latter is the most likely. Incidently, the last Trek movie I saw in theaters was Nemesis and knowing what was still to come, the ridiculous ship collision, I almost walked out of the theater. If I had known that this incorrect falling towards Earth was still in this movie...I still would've stayed, because this movie felt better and was more fun to watch. Nevertheless, it was a huge annoyance and my GF noted that I was annoyed with it.
I was wondering where the heck the Reliants deflector is... here's another one look at the end of Generations you get a Beauty pass by a Nebula Class - and what do I spot (since you hardly see their back that often) it's got no impulse engines ! weird. And I just noticed that the Vengeance has a big hole in it's saucer like a Polo Mint. and a Bridge that isn't just begging to be shot at from above but from below as well. ------ Oh and as to Nudge theory I was thinking that perhaps a ship needs thrusters or impuse engines working to stay still when pounded by ememy weapons - so when the Enterprise was pounded and she couldn't move much the pounding put her insider the stable orbit envelope. but it's unlikely that enemy weapons would move ship 45,000 miles quickly. Perhaps if the ship was traveling a 1/8th or 1/32nd Impulse when it went to warp when it was knocked out it was still moving at the speed it was before it lost engine control. and it was in a slow motion crash aimed at the earth the whole time since being knocked out of warp. Oh and i'm not sure Pulse cannons are supposed to work when in warp.
I was MUCH more upset by thescientifically inaccurate depictions of that transporter and warp drive effects than linnear starships caught in the Earth's gravity. As well as some of the lesser things- like plot, characters and acting.
I learned a long time ago to get over scientific inaccuracies in Star Trek. The franchise is loaded with them from what I understand. I just sit back and enjoy the ride.

He shoots....and he scores!!! I love how my "fellow" Trek fans totally dismiss that fact that Into Darkness was successful in maintaining public interest in the Star Trek franchise. That's the name of the game, you jackasses. Star Trek: Nemesis is a demonstration on how to do the opposite. They need to remember that next time they watch the Troi mind rape scene and dune buggy chases. Or how about when they ponder why Kirk is dead in Star Trek: Generations instead of him and Picard returning from the Nexus at a time when they could just walk up to and arrest Soran in 10-Forward? I could go on about how badly the TNG movies were, but Red Letter Media covers them all perfectly. Seriously, this kinda mass trolling at this convention where the voting took place just confirms what I've always felt - it was the right decision to never attend anything like that more than once.

I thought Into Darkness wasn't that great, but yeah, voting it to be the worst Trek ever is fan rage to the max. Extremely childish and petty. I'm sure many people will find something to object to in the Abrams movies, scientifically, artistically, whatever - and that's normal (points have been brought up in this thread by people, some I agree with, some I don't), but man..the Star Trek fandom is probably just as rotten, if not more, than the Transformers one. Lot of sour grapes in there
Is he really that stupid? People do not dislike things because they are suddenly more popular. But usually the things that appeal to the wide audience of people, because of changes done to the original stuff that the original fans liked, do not appeal to the fans anymore, because the things that made it good for the fans, where the things that put other people off. It's normal that people are pissed off, if you take away from them what they loved. And because of that his reasoning is just impulsive. The movies for itself would be awesome, but they are not Star Trek. And fans judge these movies as Star Trek movies and as such they suck. It's the same reason why Transformers fans hate Bayformers. Both have much influence from the source, but where it matters, they changed so much that the fans are put off. And by the way: Popularity and box office numbers do not say anything about the quality. If you would compare it to music, than it would mean, that the top 100 are all good and quality songs : Quality seldom appeals to the general public. This is not quality, this is just a Special FX adventure like Transformers. The visuals are the LEAST important thing of a movie. Story and music are much more important. And comments like this Just verify, that the general audience just always was too dumb for Star Trek. It was not without a reason that Trekkers were often ridiculed and why people make fun of nerds and geeks. And the reason for this are not the Trekkers themselves. The only reason why those people like Star Trek now is, because it is not Star Trek anymore. And they wonder why fans are pissed? Please.
Did the people who voted for the worst Star Trek movie even see Insurrection? That is the only Star Trek movie I never finished watching because it is a little boring and it doesn't feel like it deserves to be a movie. Honestly, I think fans should be grateful that they at least get good fun movies (maybe not the best Star Trek movies, but entertaining ones nonetheless) that keep the franchise in the public eye and bring in new fans that will get interested in the older stuff. Just look at all the poor adaptations and failed franchise relaunches like The Lone Ranger. Now that Star Trek is popular again and Abrams will finally get to make the Star Wars movie he always wanted, they can bring in a new director and maybe make it more like the originals.
Finally, someone from the movie finally speaks out for it. Pegg is more than justified to say all of that. Seriously, if people think Into Darkness is the worst Star Trek film, then there's at least three old one's that they need to re-watch (The Movie, Undiscovered Country, and Nemesis). I wish more of the haters would just admit that they're pissy over Khan. I'm not saying there aren't people who genuinely didn't like it, but I can't imagine most of them are the one's who raged on and on and on about it.
Honestly I hated Into Darkness but it's not the worst Star Trek movie. Nothing will ever top V as the worst one.
