Zod isn't a spoiler, any more than Joker was a spoiler for Dark Knight. It's been reported all over the place. I have to admit I'm not looking forward to Zod at all, though. Lazy, cop-out choice, imo.
Strangely, Zach Snyder basically refused to admit Zod was the antagonist (or whom Michael Shannon was playing) at the SDCC panel. As for the choice itself, supposedly the story for the film came about during TDKR brainstorming sessions between David Goyer and Chris Nolan. Goyer mentioned some idea for a Superman story, Nolan liked it, and decided to pitch that to Warner. I imagine that since Nolan isn't a comics guy, his knowledge of Superman enemies is hardly encyclopedic. If only we could live in a world (if for no other reason besides hilarity from the dissonance) where Chris Nolan would say to David Goyer, "Superman vs. Toyman? That's fantastic. I'll make sure that movie gets made."
In fairness, Superman's rogues gallery is very limited. You really only have: Lex Luthor, evil businessman / mad scientist Brainiac, alien AI / whatever he is this reboot, alien robot. Good for DotM / Avengers level spectacle fight sequences though. Zod, evil Kryptonian survivor, equally matched to Superman Those are the three main ones. Personally I'd have gone with Brainiac. Use the Superman TAS idea of him collecting the knowledge of worlds and then destroying them in a twisted concept of "preservation" and he's come to Earth because he took out Krypton some 25 years ago and has been tracking the last survivor ever since. Maybe even throw in that Brainiac's preservation is because there's something worse in the universe that would end all life in it unless Brainiac preserves it as a hook for a Justice League Movie. Of Superman's B and C list enemies, there's a few who would work on the big screen IMO: Conduit - 90's villain who had more of a hate for Clark Kent than Superman, based on how Clark was always ahead of him at whatever he tried to do. Then figured out Clark was Superman, but went for all of Clark's friends and loved ones. The personal element would make for a good central conflict to a movie, and his powers - Kryptonite based, due to exposure to the element when he was a baby - would make him a decent threat. Metallo - cyborg with a Kryptonite heart. Some versions have him rebuilding / incorporating bits of other machinery into his body to let him "evolve", others just do the Kryptonite powered man / Terminator thing. Probably couldn't drive a movie in his own right, but serving as the henchman to another villain - say Manheim and his Intergang - and he could work. Parasite - depends on how you handle him, again probably not good enough to drive a movie in his own right. But he drains strength and powers - sometimes memories too - from those he touches, which makes him a threat to big blue. Depending on the setup, you have a decent sequence of battles in him, though his motivation and stuff needs to be tied in with another villain. I could also mention Doomsday but he's just a big monster who only fights, good for a slugfest, bad for a longer movie though. A lot of this of course comes back to the boring answer of having Luthor behind the villains. I say give me Brainiac as a villain, or be bold and reinvent Conduit for the big screen.
Obviously Darkseid is the best choice for a Man of Steel sequel. "Return of The Man of Steel" I can see it now.
Darksied should be saved for last. Metallo would be friggin awesome to see he'd actually be a great threat.
Teaser trailer released! http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/rorschachsrants/news/?a=64193 Fabulous. And that's just one trailer, another one was released featuring Jonathan Kent! Hope to find it soon...
I would LOVE to see Mongul. My favorite Superman comic is and will forever be "For the Man Who Has Everything," so Mongul definitely has my vote.
yeah. is that footage online anywhere. I found it one place, but it was so grainy you couldn't tell what was going on.
I'd really like to know that too. Other than the shot of Clark as a child wearing a red cape and the end with Supes flying the teaser I saw last night gave no indication that it was a Superman movie. Also Clark apparently did a guest spot on Deadliest Catch.
I preferred the Comic-con trailer because it felt more like a superhero movie. This is still an awesome teaser, but the one at comic-con just kicked all kinds of butt.
I like the teaser. I was looking forward to this movie as-is, now I'm kinda hyped a bit. I might actually see the midnight premiere of it.
Hmm. Interesting teaser. I like how with the exception of the final money-shot and young Clark with the cape (and obviously the Superman logo), it doesn't give the vibe of being a Superman movie. But the clips I've seen of the trailer from CC really let you know that it's a Supes movie.
