The trailer didn't look too bad, but is it me, or are they trying too hard to make him Shatner???

Suprised they kept the original alarm sound with all the changes to the ship...

Indeed, the first two seasons of TNG (barring a gem such as Measure of a Man) were ruddy awful, perhaps some of the worst of Star Trek.

I mean, by episode 2 they were already cribbing old TOS plots! One wonders how the hell it survived.

To be fair, the "cribbed" The Naked Time as an intentional homage, not out of desperation. They failed to see at that point how important it was for TNG to establish its own voice, and not be seen as a pale imitation of the original. So their heart was in the right place, but it was a miserable failure in terms of PR.

I've recently been watching TNG chronologically on DVD, and I've just finished the first two seasons. I have to agree with you, that much of the first and second year was really weak. There are some strong episodes here and there, and the quality picks up in the second year, but there's such a tremendous increase in quality on all levels for season three that it really puts the first two years to shame. Just watched "Evolution" last night, and everything is so much better... the writing, the music, the effects, the uniforms, the image quality of the show, etc.

It took awhile for TNG to really get going, but once it did it was an outstanding show.

It also helps to remember that for a decade prior to TNG, there hadn't been any good SFTV for a long time. Really the BEST we got was the original BSG, and even that doesn't stand the test of time. Buck Rogers, Misfits of Science, Automan, Manimal for godssake... absolute drek (ironically, Knight Rider, while very much science fiction, is never really remembered as such). Compared to those shows, the first 2 seasons of TNG were gems.

Based on the trailer, I think its just you. I don't think there's enough of any character to tell how they'll come across.

I do think Kirk is the hardest character here.

Spock has his problems, and if you look at the 28 seasons and 11 movies, there are plenty of bad vulcan performances. But if you get an actor who can play a good vulcan (and there have been some), you can get a good Spock.

With Bones, you don't need to be Dee Kelley, just irascible. Get the accents, and you've got Scotty and Chekov. And Sulu, Uhura, Rand and Chapel simply were never well defined enough to create a problem.

But with Kirk, you have Shatner, and with Shatner, you have his particular idiosyncrasies. Endlessly parodied (and oft exaggerated), Shatner has a certain style, and the question is how much those quirks are of Kirk, as opposed to the actor portarying him? If Chris Pine tries to play Shatner's Kirk, it could look like an SNL parody. But if he discard's Shatner's mannerisms, will it still be Kirk?

[THIS IS A JOKE]Picard probably thought he was being dead heroic and all by resisting Cardassian attempts to persuade him that he was looking at five lights and not four. But really, what was the point of allowing himself to be tortured like that. If they'd been trying to extract vital Federation secrets, then fair enough, but the exact number of bulbs in the room can't have been of much consequence, and surely the Cardassians could have counted for themselves if it was.

Take heed: if you find yourself in such a situation, the application of a little common sense is all that's require. Just spare yourself a lot of pain by saying "Yes, there are four lights. Absolutely." Once your crew has rescued you, as they are bound to do, you can wave two fingers at your erstwhile captors and say, "Ha ha, I was lying all along." They'll be so cross.[/THIS IS A JOKE]

You completely missed the point then. He was unwilling to be broken by that Cardassian bastard. It wasn't heroism, it was a sense of self preservation.

By continually pissing off his captor, he was able to stave off the execution that was most assuredly waiting for him. If you were held against your will, beaten to hell, and you knew that once he was done playing games with your mind that he'd kill you, wouldn't you continue to screw with him just out of spite? Would you really want to lose what's left of yourself to put a smile on his face by "admitting" to the lights?

I know if someone was doing to me what happened to Picard, I'd have suffered with the pain just to piss him off yet one more day.

What was really heartbreaking was when Picard said there was a time when he thought he saw all the lights.

But he did see "all" the lights. There were four lights! He was almost convinced there was another "fifth" light that wasn't there. (just to avoid confusion).

It could have been worse for Picard, the Cardies could have made him watch Voyager instead.

I used to really dislike Voyager. So much so that when it was on the air, I had pretty much given up on it during the third season, and only occasionally watched an episode after that. But being in a Trek-watching mood lately, with the new movie coming up, I've been re-watching that series again as well as TNG (finished my DS9 marathon earlier this year). Voyager's better than I remember, generally speaking, although I can see why I quit watching given the blatant waste of the show's premise in so many episodes. It can be frustrating at times.

But despite that, I find that I enjoy Voyager a lot more than I used to, particularly once the fourth season gets underway. It seems the show improved considerably right after I gave up on it. :)  It's often much lighter fare than so much of TNG and certainly DS9, but it's decent action/adventure in the Star Trek universe. And they do manage to hit a home run from time to time, though not as often as I'd like. "Jetrel", "Fair Trade", "Death Wish", "Scorpion", "Message in a Bottle"... all very strong episodes.

    Erm, it was a joke.

Evidently I need to make a disclaimer whenever I use humour from a british publication.
