Previous first episodes sucking is no excuse for new ones being terrible. If RTD can't get his act together and deliver on day one, then he needs to give the job to somebody who can.

Not all the first episodes were awful.
The first episode altogether of Ecclestons brief stint as the Doctor was quite good.

Tennant and Agyeman's first episode together was pretty good aswell.

Regarding Torchwood, yes indeed it was so much better than season 1. I'm hoping it gets a season 3. I agree Gwen is irritating, but damn is she good looking.

The first episodes are poor because they have to focus more on introducing a new asthetic to the series than the story.
Series 1: New Doctor, new companion
Series 2: Another New Doctor, same companion
Series 3: Same Doctor, though sad, new companion
Series 4: Same Doctor, still sad, new companion

Not great. The story seemed to be run of the mill affair, designed to start off the series with tried and tested and not offend anyone. Except Fat people.

Donna actually brings a new dimension to the companion, she doesn't fancy the Doctor and is only out to see 'it all' which was an aspect of Rose that was touched on but ultimately dropped in favour of her fancying the Doctor.

Spoiler
The ending was the best bit in the show, I didn't expect it at all... I thought the whole point of Rose being stranded in the other dimension is because any travel through will weaken dimensional barriers, thus risking the release of the Daleks?

I can see hoards of the little creatures littering TRU's all over the UK...

And if we're talking about Torchwood, I like the second series alot. Except I record the episodes as I go along, and I'm up to the penultimate episode. So cheers for that final episode spoiler, dude on the first page.
Time for a change...

Thats a point right there. Maybe thats how we get to see the Daleks return?

I liked it. I thought it was funny, well written, entertaining and light-hearted, with an OMG moment at the end. (Unlike the rest of you I steered clear of all the spoilers humanly possible, so I'd only heard vague rumours about Rose showing up.)

Three years in, and there's still so much grumpiness about new Who online, despite so many people in the real world liking it. Different expectations for different audiences, maybe. I dunno, I just wish I could understand the hate.

I too was in the crowd that didnt expect Rose. I'd read that she was turning up at some point, but I never expected it to be then. That was a complete WTF moment.

I can see the Doctor being really pleased if Tikgnat's theory is true. Rose comes back, minor sidepoint, she may have released a lot of Daleks too. Oops.

I thought it was an alright episode, the ending was a big teaser though.

I'm not that big a fan of Russell's writing though, i just don't like it much. I've found myself liking the episodes written by other people much more interesting and enjoyable. Mark Gatiss writes them better IMO.

Its all about wasted potential as far as I am concerned. Tennant is great, some of the writers are good and its already proved that a mass family audience isn't a barrier to delivering quality material that doesn't make the more demanding part of the audience cringe. Regurdless of all that thougth, every Satan Pit or Human Nature is surrounded by an acre of medicority scattered with the odd turd.

I only get angry because its a franchise that I like, I woulden't give two shits if we were talking about something like Stargate or Farscape.
