Yeah I read a really interesting article about masculinity and geeks and fandoms a while ago. Geek boys created their own brand of masculinity based around geek culture rather than traditionally manly things like sport or whatever, because the jocks and such rejected them during high school and all that. Having women being accepted as geeks both by fandoms and industries threatens their masculinity because all of a sudden their geek guy thing isn't a guy thing at all. That's why the reaction against diversity in geek based things is so violently misogynist. It was very convincing and was proper academic stuff not someone running their mouth on tumblr.
