Honestly, I was perplexed by what it was until the revelation hit me today .

Agreed on the designs of other characters. Unique is what keeps this franchise going. Imagine how boring it would be if every series had the exact same roster of characters with the exact same personalities and the exact same designs and colour schemes. Bleh. See, my personal preference? If you're going to have a design be similar to G1, do it in subtle ways, rather than blatant in-your-face homages and copies (no offense, majority of TFA). Make a Wheeljack with a faceplate and those "ears", but without having the horizontal lines on them or having him be a white/red/green sportscar. You know? TFP Starscream is one of those better examples of what to do.

Thank you. I've had it as a WIP for almost a year now, so I think I'm going to get off my lazy butt and continue to work on it some more. My plan is to have his alt mode be a B-2 Stealth Bomber (even though I really wanted Megatron to be that), because it allows for a more imposing size, but also the longer, slender wings to better fit his "wing cape"-design. So his overall colour scheme will be black/dark gray, but I'm going to add a few small splashes of red, white and blue on his design, just to reference his typical colour scheme. Personality-wise, he's definitely going to be played up more as the "loyal" scientist, but with his own plans, akin to BW Tarantulas.

This is a back view (minus the arms and legs), so you're seeing his wings and how they're angled, the back of his head, the back of his shoulder pads appearing, etc.. (And as you can see, there is the 'Con symbol split on his wings). His wings would be angled at such a way that they still just barely appear over his shoulders (going up) like the traditional design, but obviously the majority of them is hanging down like a cape. And that's what I'm going for here: A cape-esque design, while still maintaining a recognizable wing position for Starscream.

I was thinking of designing my own Starscream, and I'd value your thoughts, for obvious reasons. There's no doubt that Starscream's "wing struts" jutting out from his back are an iconic design cue, but what would you think if, for the lack of a better term, his wings went the opposite way in robot mode? As opposed to angling up, they angled down? Think along the lines of DotM Sentinel's "cape struts". Two massive panels hanging down like a royal garment. Here's a quick mock-up I drew.

And of course, with some Bayformers Starscream design thrown in there.

It's a problem for both sides. The one side automatically rushes to the defense of Bayformers at the slightest mention of it's poor quality, while the other side deliberately looks for things to hate on. And then of course, as you said, the people in the middle sort of get forgotten.
