Works differently for everyone really, with commissions, but money is always involved.
With Turk128, I find photographic poses for him to work off of, make notes on particular details I'd like, then I stick around while he sketches in case he needs to ask me stuff on any details he's iffy on what I might want. He scans a sketch, I tell him if there's anything I want changed, then he finishes up and sends me the final.
E! is much more laid back. I can just pitch him an idea and he gets inspired, and then he's off to work. Since his stuff is usually digital, I can add lots of input along the way.

I know a lot of stuff is getting canceled, but think about the economy. It might have just been a lot less feasible than we think to keep all this stuff going. Even with all the money the movie made, Hasbro could still be worried about other investments and their future plans.
Still, cancelling Animated...that's probably killing their current profits. Now they have to start ALL OVER AGAIN rather than having an established show...ugh, somedays it's all so hard to comprehend.
