Glad it hit that sweet spot, where it's not a failure, but it didn't do as well as they had hoped. It means we're still going to get more movies, but Bay likely won't be doing them anymore. Hopefully the Bumblebee movie is both a success, and is written well. It would be nice to get past that hurdle that comic movies were able to cross.

What an incredibly massive disappointment. But not surprising, given what a poor film it was.

A lesson to the creative team behind these films, QUALITY MATTERS. Did you really think this franchise could survive another ROTF/AOE review disaster?

I'm disappointed because it only needed a day or two more to pass one of the Divergent movies...

Where\'s your 1 billion dollar cockiness now lorenzo/bay???? They actually think they\'re better than the critics and fans. This isn\'t a failure, this is punishment.

So that leaves Daddy's Home 2 for Paramount to see if they can get anything domestically over $130 million this year. But internationally this was their last really big film of the year and so little to show for it.

The last screening here in Peru would be tomorrow. I am tempted to go.

This is good. It's now been proved that these movies are not invulnerable, as Bay/Bonaventura's cockiness made them seen. So, if it bleeds, we can kill it. Let's do it. A hard reboot is well overdue.

It has little to do with the quality of the movies. It has to do with competition.

Targeting the same types of movies - Super-hero, sci-fi, action, fantasy - to the same auidence, every weekend, for three solid months, will lose no matter what movie is put up. Even Spider-Man, considered very well done and critically acclaimed, was the worst performing Spider-Man movie.

These are the summer 2017 movies for those genres::
    1. Guardians of the Galaxy 2
    2. Alien Covenant
    3. Pirates of the Caribbean 5
    4. Wonder Woman
    5. The Mummy
    6. Transformers: TLK
    7. Spider-Man Homecoming
    8. War for the Planet of the Apes
    9. Valerian
    10. The Dark Tower
That's $150 worth in tickets for one person (double that if I go with anyone else, which I will) and 10 Saturday nights. There are, by the way 18 Saturday nights starting when GoTG2 came out until the end of August.

These are the ones at least I saw in theaters
    1. Guardians of the Galaxy 2
    2. Transformers the Last Knight
These are the ones I saw via pirating
    1. Alien Covenant
    2. The Mummy
These are the ones I have yet to see
    1. Pirates of the Caribbean 5
    2. Wonder Woman
    3. Spider-Man Homecoming
    4. War for the Planet of the Apes
    5. Valerian
    6. The Dark Tower

People saying they want a new director, new director or whatever for Transformers movies entirely miss the point. THat's fine to want and there are good reasons why to do it, but it also a completely irrelevant point. Regardless of how good the movie or production quality is (see: Spider-Man, War for the Planet of the Apes), movie studios can't expect to release a new movie every weekend for 18 weekends, and every one of them do good business. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 for example, made barely more money than the first installment, despite being released in the best spot of the entire Summer.

Movies can either make a billion dollars and there be fewer of them, or they can make half that and they can carpet bomb the summer. Fact is, no matter how good, nobody is really going to spend $150 for themselves (or more) on spending 10 out of 18 Saturday nights in a theater. Not in 2017.

So sure, let's get a new director, but anyone thinking that'll make these movies do better is kidding themselves. You may get a movie more to your liking, but don't be surprised if it does worse, because the Summer movie schedule through 2021 looks incredibly full.

Such a sad note when that's considered a box office failure. So many other movies would KILL for a box office take of that size.

Just goes to show you that Icarus did indeed fly too close to the sun and we helped support it.

I think you make a valid point. In my opinion, the movie franchise should just be put to rest for awhile. I know that certainly won't happen (unless the revenue gets horrendously low), but I for one am exhausted at this point.

That's a very interesting point. While I'm sure that people not liking it hurt the score and prevented the essential rewatches that help a tentpole movie make insane profits, I also have to note that very few people rewatch movies in general in theaters - going out to the movies is freaking expensive for the consumer, since the expensive ticket prices aren't the only cost of going to the theaters. Combine that with the opportunity cost of doing other things, or of catching movies via streaming, and it's no wonder that Hollywood is facing a slump.

Except if the movie was actually good, then people would've chosen to see it over it's competition. Quality does matter.

Problem is, Bumblebee may not draw people in, being so soon after this one... Hopefully I'm wrong, but the failure of The Last Knight is likely gonna leave some people with a serious case of franchise fatigue.

Everyone saying this movie is a failure but it\'s not but it\'s a wake up call to Paramount to stop letting bay direct. Still made triple it\'s budget, still ran for 9.3 weeks. A flop is a movie that doesn\'t run for  2 weeks or earnings don\'tmatch the budget for the movie though studios would say glop money wise if they don\'t get more money  than the budget out of the movie.

I\'m glad the film made the money it did.  Hopefully marketing overkill won\'t happen and because the film isn\'t directed by Michael Bay leads to the Bumblebee movie making more money.

People can't tell the difference between under performing and bombing.
