A passenger flight carrying 239 people from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing is missing and would likely have run out of fuel, Malaysia Airlines said Saturday...
"At the moment we have no idea where this aircraft is right now," Malaysia Airlines Vice President of Operations Control Fuad Sharuji said on CNN's "AC360."
Subang Air Traffic Control lost contact with Flight MH370 at about 2:40 a.m. local time (1:40 p.m. ET Friday), Sharuji said.

The Boeing 777-200 departed Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 12:41 a.m. and was expected to land in Beijing at 6:30 a.m., a 2,300-mile (3,700 kilometer) trip. It was carrying 227 passengers, two of them infants, and 12 crew members, the airline said.
The passengers are of 13 nationalities, the airline said.
At the time of its disappearance, the plane was carrying about 7.5 hours of fuel, Sharuji said.
"Malaysia Airlines is currently working with the authorities who have activated their Search and Rescue team to locate the aircraft,".

Two of the passengers passports are reportedly stolen, which has lead to speculation of terrorism.

U.S. officials told NBC News on Saturday that they are investigating terrorism concerns after revelations that two people apparently boarded the missing Malaysia Airlines jetliner with stolen passports.

The officials said that they had found no clear link to terrorism. There are other criminal reasons, for example drug smuggling, that stolen passports might be used to board a plane.

Two names on the passenger manifest of the plane, Malaysia Flight 370, matched passports reported stolen in Thailand, one from an Italian man and the other from an Austrian man, according to foreign governments and NBC News sources.

The news, hours after the jet disappeared over the South China Sea with 239 people on board, significantly changed how U.S. officials looked at the disaster. The officials said they were checking into passenger manifests and going back through intelligence.

“We are aware of the reporting on the two stolen passports,” one senior official said. “We have not determined a nexus to terrorism yet, although it’s still very early, and that’s by no means definitive.”

(CNN) -- A grim-faced Malaysian Prime Minister confirmed the worst fears of the families of those aboard Flight 370, announcing Monday that the missing plane went down in the southern Indian Ocean.
New analysis of satellite data by a British satellite company and accident investigators led to that conclusion, Prime Minister Najib Razak said.
"They have told us all lives are lost," a missing passenger's relative briefed by the airline in Beijing said.
While the last-minute announcement appeared to end hopes of finding survivors more than two weeks after the flight vanished, it left many key questions unanswered, including what went wrong aboard the Beijing-bound airliner and the location of its wreckage in the deep, wild waters of the Indian Ocean.

Really? I'm super intrested in Aviation as well! I play Flight Simulators much as I can, I memorise all the checklists as well. Imo, the Boeing 777-200 compared to the 737-900 is much better with it's computerised systems. But I still love the classic 737-900. With that said, hope the people omboard are okay

A search and rescue operation is under way after Malaysia Airlines said a plane carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew on board went missing en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

The company said that it lost contact with the aircraft two hours after takeoff and it was now working with authorities who had deployed search and rescue teams to locate the aircraft. The plane left Kuala Lumpur at 12.41am local time on Saturday (6.41pm GMT on Friday).

A statement from the airline said it was contacting the next-of-kin of passengers and crew.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with all affected passengers and crew and their family members," it said.

Radar contact with the aircraft, flight MH370, was lost in airspace controlled by Vietnam in the early hours of Saturday morning, China's Xinhua news agency said. The aircraft did not enter airspace controlled by China and did not make contact with Chinese controllers, Xinhua added.

Xinhua said 160 of the passengers on board were Chinese nationals, citing Chinese aviation officials.

China's foreign minister, Wang Yi, told a scheduled press conference China was doing all it could to confirm details of the incident and said he was "very worried", state media reported.

The flight had been expected to land at Beijing at 6.30am local time. The passengers on board included two infants, according to the airline, which also released a telephone number which members of the public could call to seek information.

The last major accident involving a Malaysia Airlines flight was in September 1995, when one of its aircraft crashed in the Malaysian city of Tawau, killing 34 people on board and injuring nine on the ground.

The initial statement published on Facebook by the airline said: "Malaysia Airlines confirms that flight MH370 has lost contact with Subang air traffic control at 2.40am, today (8 March 2014).

"Flight MH370, operated on the B777-200 aircraft, departed Kuala Lumpur at 12.41am on 8 March 2014. MH370 was expected to land in Beijing at 6.30am the same day. The flight was carrying a total number of 227 passengers (including 2 infants), 12 crew members. Malaysia Airlines is currently working with the authorities who have activated their Search and Rescue team to locate the aircraft.

"The airline will provide regular updates on the situation. Meanwhile, the public may contact +603 7884 1234 for further info."

A Boeing 777, part of Boeing's most popular family of large twin-engine jets, was involved in a crash in July last year in San Francisco in which three people died. One of the passengers who died was hit by a fire truck in the aftermath of the crash. Despite the deaths and injuries suffered by many of the plane's 291 passengers, safety experts subsequently said that the safety features of the aircraft "helped to prevent" a much worse disaster.

One of the planes also crash-landed short of a runway at Heathrow airport in January 2008, ripping off part of its undercarriage. All 136 passengers and 16 crew escaped from the British Airways flight from Beijing. It crashed after losing power because of a restricted fuel flow to both engines, the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said afterwards. It concluded that the crash-landing was probably caused by a buildup of ice in the fuel system on the plane.

Malaysia Airlines was last year voted was voted Asia's leading airline at the World Travel Awards 2013, beating 11 other big name full service carriers.

But it has been struggling financially. Earlier this year, it posted its fourth consecutive loss. It announced last month that it was waiting for government approval to place a multibillion dollar order for up to 100 Airbus and Boeing passenger aircraft, two people familiar with the negotiations told Reuters, a move aimed at boosting its profitability.

The new aircraft will lower the airline's operating costs by allowing it to retire its older, less fuel-efficient aircraft. That may help it cope with intense competition at home and within Southeast Asia, the people said.

The airline has 88 aircraft in its fleet, including Airbus A330s and A380s, and Boeing 777-200s and 737s, according to its website.

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - A Malaysia Airlines flight carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew crashed in the South China Sea on Saturday, Vietnamese state media said, quoting a senior naval official.

The Boeing 777-200ER flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing had been missing for hours when Vietnam's Tuoi Tre news quoted Admiral Ngo Van Phat as saying he had asked boats from an island off south Vietnam to rush to the crash site.

If the report is confirmed, it would mark the U.S.-built airliner's deadliest crash since entering service 19 years ago.

Malaysia Airlines had yet to confirm that the aircraft had crashed. It said earlier in the day that no distress signal had been given and cited early speculation that the plane may have landed in Nanming in southern China.

Flight MH370, operating a Boeing 777-200ER aircraft, last had contact with air traffic controllers 120 nautical miles off the east coast of the Malaysian town of Kota Bharu, Malaysia Airlines chief executive Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said in a statement read to a news conference in Kuala Lumpur.

Malaysia and Vietnam were conducting a joint search and rescue, he said but gave no details. China has also sent two maritime rescue ships to the South China Sea to help in any rescue, state television said on one of its microblogs.

"We are extremely worried," Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told reporters in Beijing before the Vietnamese report that the plane had crashed. "The news is very disturbing. We hope everyone on the plane is safe."

The flight left Kuala Lumpur at 12.21 a.m. (11.21 a.m. ET Friday) but no trace had been found of the plane hours after it was due to land in the Chinese capital at 6.30 a.m. (5.30 p.m. ET Friday) the same day.

"We deeply regret that we have lost all contacts with flight MH370," Jauhari said.

Malaysia Airlines said people from 14 nationalities were among the 227 passengers, including at least 152 Chinese, 38 Malaysians, 12 Indonesians, six Australians and three Americans. It also said a Chinese infant and an American infant were on board.

If it is confirmed that the plane has crashed, the loss would mark the second fatal accident involving a Boeing 777 in less than a year and by far the worst since the jet entered service in 1995.

An Asiana Airlines Boeing 777-200ER crash-landed in San Francisco in July 2013, killing three passengers and injuring more than 180.

Boeing said it was aware of reports that the Malaysia Airlines plane was missing and was monitoring the situation but had no further comment. The flight was operating as a China Southern Airlines codeshare.

An official at the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) said the plane had failed to check in as scheduled at 1721 GMT while it was flying over the sea between Malaysia and Ho Chi Minh city.

SEPANG, Malaysia (Reuters) - Malaysian authorities have not confirmed that a Malaysia Airlines flight, carrying 239 passengers and crew, had crashed after it went missing over the South China Sea, Transport Minister Hishamuddin Hussein said on Saturday.

Hishamuddin said there was no sign of any plane wreckage and denied Vietnamese state media reports that the plane had crashed south of an island off Vietnam.

"We are doing everything in our power to locate the plane.

We are doing everything we can to ensure every possible angle has been addressed," Hishamuddin told reporters near the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

"We are looking for accurate information from the Malaysian military. They are waiting for information from the Vietnamese side."

One women in her twenties entered the room frantically crying, ignoring questions from a large group of journalists who had crowded outside the door.

Security at times struggled to hold back a huge throng of reporters who made it difficult for the families to enter or exit the room.

07:46 GMT - My colleague Neil Connor at the Lido Hotel, near Beijing airport where relatives and friends of the passengers were taken, as spoken to some of the people there.

"They should have told us something before now," said one man at the hotel, who was in his thirties and from the northern Chinese city of Tianjin. The man, who was visibly distressed, did not say who was on the airplane that he came to meet.

Another man, who was also in his twenties, struggled to help someone who appeared to be his grieving mother into a quiet room, as journalists tried to interview her.

He then angrily said: "We haven't been told anything about this. They (Malaysia Airlines) are useless. I don't know why they haven't released any information."

07:19 GMT - As the location and fate of the plane continues to remain in doubt, authorities at Beijing have gathered the passengers' families at a nearby hotel.

Many of them were seen breaking down in tears as they arrived at the airport.

07:05 GMT - Safety - The Boeing 777 has a solid safety record, with only a handful of incidents since its introduction in the mid-1990s.

In July 2013, a Boeing 777-200 operated by South Korea's Asiana Airlines skidded off the runway upon landing at San Francisco's international airport after it clipped a seawall before touching down.

Three people died.

"We're closely monitoring reports on Malaysia flight MH370. Our thoughts are with everyone on board," Boeing said in a statement on its Twitter feed.

06:26 GMT - Ships sent - Faridah Shuib, a spokeswoman for the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency says Malaysian authorities have dispatched a plane, two helicopters and four vessels to search seas off its east coast in the South China Sea.

The Philippines says it is sending three navy patrol boats and a surveillance plane to help efforts.

06:24 GMT - No warning - The airline has said the plane relayed no distress signal or other indications of trouble.

?You can?t assume that there are no survivors, and if there are any, it is absolutely crucial that they are picked up within a day, or the chances of survival drops significantly.?

?Airline pilots are not trained in crash landings in the sea, but they are taught the techniques. Both the pilots and the cabin crew are also taught the survival skills necessary in such situations.?

The Vietnamese government on its website has already said the plane lost contact in Ca Mau province airspace before it had entered contact with Ho Chi Minh City air traffic control.

A report by China's Xinhua news agency quoted Chinese aviation authorities as saying the plane did not enter China's air traffic control sphere, and a spokeswoman with a Thai agency that monitors the country's airspace told AFP the plane also did not cross over Thailand.

Malaysian Airlines is running a statement given by Group CEO Ahmad Jauhari Yahya on its Facebook site, in which he expresses his sadness and confirms Flight MH370 "lost contact with Subang Air Traffic Control at 2.40am, today."

He adds there has been "speculation" the plan had landed at Nanming, in China. "We are working to verify the authenticity of the report and others."

The statement also gives a breakdown of the 239 passengers and crew ? comprising 227 passengers (including 2 infants), 12 crew members.

05:13 GMT - Never appeared - A Vietnam government statement on its official website quoting a ministry of defence official says the plane was meant to transfer to Ho Chi Minh City air traffic control at 1722 GMT but never appeared.

The statement goes on to say that Vietnam's Ministry of Defence has launched rescue efforts to find the plane, working in coordination with Malaysian and Chinese officials.

05:10 GMT - No news - Reporters at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport are being barred from entering a specially designated waiting area for relatives of those on the flight.

Looking somber and distraught relatives are trickling into the airport escorted by authorities.

"They gave us no information so far," said one man, whose niece and her husband were on the flight to go on a one-week holiday in China.

Neil Connor in Beijing reports seeing a man who appeared to be in his sixties entering a room, wiping tears from his eyes with a handkerchief, and punching a cameraman in the face when he tried to film him as he walked by.

At the same time a security shouted "Don't you all have families."

08:18 GMT - A father mourns - Hamid Ramlan, a 56-year-old policeman living in the capital Kuala Lumpur, tells AFP that his daughter, 34, and son in law, 24, were on the flight.

"My wife is crying. Everyone is sad. My house has become a place of mourning? This is Allah's will. We have to accept it. But we will from tonight hold special prayers for Allah's help. I want to see my daughter and her husband who were on the flight to Beijing for a holiday," he says.

"There was no premonition that something bad will happen. I drove them to the airport. We hugged and my daughter was so happy to go on the trip. Being a policeman over 33 years, this is my worst day," he adds.

Some 10 people have gathered inside their small police apartment quarters to offer condolences with more expected to come.

Kuala Lumpur — 08:38 GMT - No confirmation - Malaysian Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein says he has not been able to confirm an earlier report by Vietnamese state media, quoting a naval official saying the plane had crashed off southern Vietnam.

"But since that information came from the Vietnamese navy, I have asked our navy to contact their counterparts immediately," he told reporters in Kuala Lumpur.

"At the moment we have no information of any wreckage at sea. I can confirm that we have not yet found the location of the plane."

Vietnam authorities said contact with Flight MH370 was lost near its airspace, but its exact location and what happened to it remained a mystery 12 hours after it slipped off air-traffic control screens.

Malaysia Airlines said the plane, on an overnight flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, relayed no distress signal, indications of rough weather, or other signs of trouble.
