I feel bad for the family. When kids being kids (and that is what this is) ends up getting you killed there are real problems in this world.

A firearm should not be shot by an officer without threat to their safety. The officer most likely lost his temper by the chase and continued.

There is no way the cop should be reinstated. In addition the lawsuit against the state could be huge. Only problem is, they'll never get their son back.

He could have just turned off the engine. But, yeah the cops were a little excessive, but that how cops are. They have this superior complex and will abuse anyone. Police and returning vets are the biggest culprits of domestic violence. They are trained to kill and have people obey them, they end up not being able to, I guess "tone it down" and differentiate situations, levels for disputes/issues that don't warrant such high force. It's only 8 am here, sorry if this not understandable *babble babble babble*

couldn't the officer just have shot the tires or the engine block? Or even use bean bag rounds? Or tasers? Or even miniature EMP pulse? Tear Gas? Negotiation?

Actually, keeping the engine running on a truck is a dangerous thing to do. A several tonne vehicle is just another potential weapon to a cop. Just ram that right foot down and squished cop.

The moral to this story is,

    i) Don't smoke.
ii) Don't take a vehicle (no matter whose it is) without permission.
iii) What an armed officer is pointing a gun at you, just do what he goddamn says.

    Edit
Oh and I have to take issue with this. If the cops weren't there you'd be living in an anarchic world where you would probably have your stuff stolen, house burned down and be dead. Cops are absolutely necessary for your life to continue in a civilised manner.

    Simple math:

Try to run over/crash into cops=Cops shoot you if you don't do what they say.

This. The chase video from the cop's car was also released and this kid was a moron.

He was driving so fast that the supplies on the truck's trailer went flying off everywhere. I think the trailer actually went flying off as well. He stopped in the middle of the street and backed into the cop's car. He drove down a one way street and almost ran over several people.

If he had pulled over, he would still be alive. He acted like a threat and was treated as such. It's unfortunate, but I find the kid to be completely at fault in this case.

*Edit* Link to dash cam video.

This is why kids should play Need for Speed and not Call of Duty.

Seriously? Don't their cops get educated or something? Are there no requirements for their recruits to meet? Was Police Academy no comedy but a documentary?

So? Still no need to shoot someone. With that attitude you must have hundreds of people being shot every year. That's crazy. Judge Dredd was not meant to be an instruction manual.

So you would be ok with someone behaving like a dumbass and being a general threat/danger to not just your safety, but to the safety of others? The reality of the situation is that the cop did as he was trained to. He saw a perceivable danger to him and those around him. Unfortunately, it resulted in that teen's death due to the poor choices THE TEEN made, NOT due to the choices the officer made. Being a bleeding heart on issues like this is what distorts reality.

But hey...if you want to get ran over by some dumbass while a cop watches and does absolutely nothing to protect you, why not protest and help make those changes happen. I promise you I won't be a bleeding heart when I read about it in the news.

Like somebody using a stick to poke a hornet's nest, this kid didn't deserve to die but he definitely did his best to ask for it. The cop was totally, albeit unfortunately, in the right.

I'd love to see the source where you got such a total load of bullshit. Most cops are good guys. The problem is, like anything else, cops usually only get noticed when something bad happens. As for the vets... you have no idea what you are talking about.
