Controversy over statue of nude woman- but where is her skin?

Damien Hirst's Verity, A Statute Of A Naked Pregnant Woman, Erected In Devon

Now, I aint linking to the story because I don't know if it'll break some sort of rule because she's naked.

SO I caught this story on the Huffington Post UK website:

Quote:
Damien Hirst's controversial statue of a naked, pregnant woman wielding a sword has taken her place on a Devon seafront.

The 20 metre (66ft) bronze monument has been given on a 20-year loan by the artist to the coastal town of Ilfracombe in north Devon.

Opinions are divided over whether the 25 tonne "Verity" would be an asset to the town, with some describing the statue as "a monstrosity" and "an affront to public decency".
First of all... I thought that the UK was cool with nudity. But the nudity isn't what gets me; what gets me is that half of her skin is peeled off!.

Quote:
Some described the anatomical cross-section of her head and body revealing the developing foetus in her womb as garish, while others disapproved of the woman's naked breast.
I don't call that a cross section; look at her arm and leg- her skin is peeled like a banana.

So, in short, there is a town with a 66ft statue of a zombie- with some bare breast and nice, aroused, pokey nipples.

Now, I have no issue with the nudity or the statement the artist is making:
Quote:
The title is from the Italian word for truth, while she holds the traditional symbols denoting justice - a sword and scales. The scales are hidden and off balance behind her back while the sword is held confidently in her upstretched arm.

Writing on his website, Hirst said: "Without the perfect equilibrium enacted by the scales, the sword becomes a dangerous instrument of power, rather than justice."
But the story focuses more about the nakedness and not the Walking Dead aspect of it. Don't get me wrong- it is beautifully detailed (her face is rather bland tho) but I do find a statue of a skinned nude chick to be weird.

It's a freaking statue. I see no skin. only metal (what the statue is made out of). :/

Damien Hirst's Verity, A Statute Of A Naked Pregnant Woman, Erected In Devon

Looks like something taken out of an Anatomy book.

Freaky.

If I was living in Devon and that was the most offensive thing I encountered all day, I would consider myself well lucky.

I seen pics. It's definitely a weird statue, but my jimmies remain unrustled. People need to get a life and stop bitching about stuff like this.

A well-done piece, but I suppose I can see why some people would find it inappropriate for public display in that place, given it's message and it's aesthetics, and the fact it's planned to stay there for 20 years. Something more... conservative may have been a better move, but hey, art!

Might have been a much better piece for a gallery or a museum.

I think its a extremely beautiful statue, if a bit morbid.

Clearly they do not understand that the statue is in fact just part of a larger plan of Halloween decorations.

It sounds like a neat statue. Not sure it belongs right outside a TOWN, but to each their own...
