Damien Hirst's Verity, A Statute Of A Naked Pregnant Woman, Erected In Devon

Now, I aint linking to the story because I don't know if it'll break some sort of rule because she's naked.

SO I caught this story on the Huffington Post UK website:

First of all... I thought that the UK was cool with nudity. But the nudity isn't what gets me; what gets me is that half of her skin is peeled off!.

I don't call that a cross section; look at her arm and leg- her skin is peeled like a banana.

So, in short, there is a town with a 66ft statue of a zombie- with some bare breast and nice, aroused, pokey nipples.

Now, I have no issue with the nudity or the statement the artist is making:
But the story focuses more about the nakedness and not the Walking Dead aspect of it. Don't get me wrong- it is beautifully detailed (her face is rather bland tho) but I do find a statue of a skinned nude chick to be weird.

If I was living in Devon and that was the most offensive thing I encountered all day, I would consider myself well lucky.

I seen pics. It's definitely a weird statue, but my jimmies remain unrustled. People need to get a life and stop bitching about stuff like this.

A well-done piece, but I suppose I can see why some people would find it inappropriate for public display in that place, given it's message and it's aesthetics, and the fact it's planned to stay there for 20 years. Something more... conservative may have been a better move, but hey, art!

Might have been a much better piece for a gallery or a museum.

Clearly they do not understand that the statue is in fact just part of a larger plan of Halloween decorations.

It sounds like a neat statue. Not sure it belongs right outside a TOWN, but to each their own...

I was expecting something gross when I heard about this, but the statue looks good. Nice piece.

Its on the other side. Basically her right side is normal, and her left side is a cutaway like the visible woman.

I've seen it via google and I'm not impressed, the way I see it; if a half skinned pregnant chick had to pick up a sword, the planet's pretty much boned anyway, otherwise my interpretation of his statue is what a waste of good brass for ammo.

I'm can't say I'm very fond of the statue, but that's mostly because I find both pregnant women and those anatomy-style cut-aways to be gross. Combine them and you've got two things that I find unsettling in one statue and it's a bit much for me. But, that said, I don't see anything offensive about it; especially not the nudity, which is a fairly common thing in artistic works. Also, the statue is quite well-done and the artist clearly has a lot of talent.

Off-topic, but whoever wrote that article and/or their editor needs to do a better job proof-reading their headlines.

I dig it. The scale really ups the surrealism (65 feet!).

Nude statues are pretty common when you think about it. I'm not really bothered by nudity, but like the OP said, the skin peeling thing is too much.
