Performax International, a Queensland based performance car company has stated that it will be importing the Chevrolet Camaro into Australia.

Check it out: http://www.themotorreport.com.au/339...und-after-all/

So, who's keen if the price is right?

can't you just import a left-hand drive one yourself and not bother with paying them to conver it? are is there some legal issue that requires Aussie cars to be RHD? i'm not familiar with the laws and such.

I'm no expert, but these two links may detail some of the hoops you'd be jumping through to do just that:

importing a motor vehicle - Importing a Motor Vehicle.

Bringing Your Car to Australia - Australian Automobile Association - Registering to drive left hand drive vehicles

Now, money is the big thing so I cheated a bit and used the ZIP code for Wall Street in New York to build a Camaro that I would like to drive, basically I went to the top end SS

Net in US Dollars: $36,365

Now converted to Australian Dollars: 45,160.40

The duty payable is 10%xCost so 45,160.40x0.10 = 4516.04

Transport and Insurance, say, $4,500

Now is where it gets really fun

Current cost it: 54,176.44 for a Camaro

Tax = 54,176.44x0.10 = 5417.65

Sub total = $59,595.10AUS

LCT: 59,595.10 - 57,180 = 2415.10

LCT Payable: 2415.10x(11x0.33) = 8766.81

So in total, I'd be looking at 45,160.40 for the car, trimmed how I want it and then I add Duty (4516.04), Transport cost (4,500 as a ballpark figure) Goods and Services Tax (5417.65) and LCT (8766.81)

So for a car that costs in the USA approximately $32,000 I would pay: $68,361.91

UPDATE:

Performax got back to me with the pricing for the SS version the Camaro in Australia: its not looking pretty Aussie Muscle fans.

Quote:
At this stage we anticipate that the SS version will retail for somewhere between $120,000 and $150,000 all taxes paid

Although to be fair a lot of that extra cost would go towards converting the vehicle from LHD to RHD and some other compliance testing, given my shakey formula still comes in at 50% or so of that cost, is it more worth it to just import the vehicle?

i would say it's worth it, unless Performax has exclusive rights to import the car, then you might run into legal trouble importing one other than through them.

If that's the case, screw them, I'll just get a Dodge Challeneger SRT instead. Much nicer looking car.
