Cool! Screw the vulcan death grip, I want to learn the one-inch-pee-punch!

Though maybe, given the effects, some distance between yourself and your opponent is advised?

Started with western boxing for about a year, studied Bujinkan Taijutsu for 12 years, and have been doing brazilian jiu jitsu for a year now.

how much stamina you think you will have when you ar older?

strangely, enough, my 'medic instructor suggested to my class to take pressure point training or self defense before hitting the streets.
Prowl_Delta_31, you think it was good advice?

me, i always wanted to learn capoeira- any style where you can kick ass and folks think you are breakdancing has to be a win.

is there a MA that is good for working on blood pressure- getting it down and low impact toning exercises? i don't like real violence, but just being able to do something new would be nice.

Capoeira is good for video game fighting, that's about it. Fun to watch, but is impractical.

If it's just exercise that you are looking for, something like Karate or Tae Kwon Do is good for getting the heart going. As for self defense, they are not great options, IMO.

Each self defense class is different, so who knows if you would have a good instructor, or if they teach you anything useful. Make sure to see if you can observe a class before joining.

In the jams that I got myself into, my wrestling background helped tremendously. I would look for a class that incorporates some grappling. Whether it is judo, wrestling, BJJ, or an MMA class. The thing about BJJ is that there is risk involved if you try and use it on the street. You can get your head spiked on the concrete if you try to pull guard, or get stomped on, roll onto broken glass, etc.
I saw a Boxing commercial and it said "It's a fight to the finish" Thats a good place to end.

thanks for the input. about taking the classes for our field work, i asked because i volunteered with a rural squad and we had a 2 person crew (woman driver, me in the back) and 90 percent of the time no police backup. the few times i faced a threat. i was looking at 10+ minutes before a cop could get there.
all that saved me from an ass whooping was good old Coca-Cola. ( i conned them into thinking Aspartame Poisoning was lethal.)
But i guess the cops here can tell you- your wits help more than MA most of the time. Still, a little fighting skill never hurts.

as far as MA goes for my health, i think i want to try MA because pushing weights or biking gets old fast and with MA, i can learn how my body works and explore a new culture.

thanks again!

Totally agree with everything funk had to say. Would suggest looking into southern chinese systems. I am a big supporter of these systems. If you're looking for a system that useful even when you're old is chen style tai chi. Best to find someone who learn from Master Ren. I touched hands with one of his top students. It was like fighting a "ghost". Very practical and skillful.

Actually in ALL Taekwondo classes I've taken have had excellent self defense techniques. Currently in my new school we do A LOT of Judo and Hapikido (learning how to do break falls right now). In two weeks they are even having a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu seminar to teach students ground attacks. Just got to check out a school and see what they offer. Having an instructor that is well versed in several martial arts I find is a good choice. They always find the best ways to defend yourself.
