The Official TFW2005 Fantasy Baseball 2008 League

League has been set up at Yahoo! Sports.

League ID#: 61240
Password: boombox

Settings are SET. So please keep the complaints about settings to a minimum. These settings have been used for many many years now with no problems.

20 teams allowed. First come first serve.

Live draft is on Sunday March 23 at 4:00PM EDT. We need an even number of teams to start the draft so come draft day, if we have an odd number of teams, the last team in will have to be kicked out.

Oh and deadwood teams need not apply. Only serious players wanted. Deadwood teams will be given a lot of grief here on the boards.

Since this is the first year that we've had an official fantasy baseball league, there won't be any rewards or such for winning. Just bragging rights. If our league is a success this year, then we can think about awards the following years.

I plan to begin official fantasy sports leagues for football and basketball as well in the future. I may not be interested in commishing leagues such as hockey or basketball so PM me if you'd like commish those leagues.

Good luck!

Cool.

Only thing I'm wondering about is why you have OPS instead of batting average, as that sort of forces you to look even more for power hitting rather than, well, hitting for average.

My Sell/Trade thread, with a few TFs, a bunch of comics, and now original (albeit mostly incomplete) He-Man figures
My feedback thread

I take it you never read Moneyball huh?

Sabermetrics, the study of baseball statistics, considers batting average a weak measure of performance because it does not correlate as well as other measures to runs scored, and because it has little predictive value. Batting average does not take into account walks or power, whereas other statistics such as on-base percentage and slugging percentage have been specifically designed to measure such concepts. Adding these statistics together form a player's On-base plus slugging or "OPS". This is commonly seen as a much better, though not perfect, indicator of a player's overall batting ability as it is a measure of hitting for average, hitting for power and drawing bases on balls.

I'm fully aware of using OPS to better equate a player's worth. However, that still doesn't mean that using it in place of average is better, because as I said it means that the players who are speed guys who hit for a good average and steal bases won't be quite as valuable, but if you don't care about that then I guess it's ok.

Anyway, I don't want to get into an argument, I was just wandering about your specific reason for the change.

Players who hit well and steal a lot are still very valuable in that setting. It all depends, however, on whether or not a manager wants to horde base stealers or give up on that category.

There wasn't a problem of players who hit well who can also steal being snatched up quickly in past leagues when we switched from batting average to OPS.

Ok, I'm in. This will be my second shot at an online pool, and I've got 25 waiver moves in the Cybertron.ca hockey pool, so you won't have to worry about me sitting around doing nothing. Course all those moves have me in last place..........

So I assume if I'm not available on draft day(as I often work sundays) that the Computer will pick my players in the order I have layed them out?, of course assuming those I have selected are still available?
