Are there any FREE anti-virus/spyware programs anymore?

My roommate's got a pretty bad infestation right now, and all the recomended programs scan for free, but won't fix anything till he hands over some money.

Now, personally, I don't trust paying for this type of thing since Nortin overlooked a rather bad infection on my box, and my roomate gots some issues of his own.

So my question to you: Are there any good protection programs that are still FREE?

AVG and Ad-aware (both are free) are must-haves on your comp.

Don't forget spybot S+D, and hijack this (use with caution).
