inspired by the A-level thread, i present the GCSE thread!

Ok, so who here is starting their GCSE's in september? and what subjects have you chosen and have to take anyway?

ok, for those non uk peoples, GCSE's are where at the age of 13/14 a student chooses some subjects to take further, and which subjects to drop at the minimum required level. the course spans for the next 2 school years (years 10 and 11) and you end up with an a,b, ect letter mark, which is then used during collage when applying for universitys since the A-level results are not back for the time when the universitys pick thier students. if anyone wants to do a much better job than i have done, feel free too.

subjects i have to keep
english (eh)
maths (i need it anyway, not even accounting for the fact that i like it)
science (see below)
PE ( it would not be so bad if the 'teachers' knew any sportys other than footbal (ya allright, soccor) and could spell, yet alone understand the word NO)
ICT ( just the clait course, but a more expanded version is avalible in the choices)
modules (RE, citezenship, sex education, ect, ect each in 6 week doses)

choices
electronics (i just like it)
seperate sciences ( biology, chemestry and physics in seperate lessons, and the GCSE that would go with the standard science is used to complete the set of a GCSE each for physics, chemestry and biology)
geography ( again, i like it)
history ( i just like learniung about how dead person x did action y to person r)

those subjects which i love to dump!
food tech/cooking- everything i did came out looking the same-burnt to a crisp
textiles- i am not going to end up in a chinese sweatshop am i?
woodwork- i have good ideas, but the execution is terrible
music- snoozetime
art- i only liked the clay part of it and summer homework is a big nono. also, see woodwork
PE- I wish
french- i'll just hire a linguist if i want to go to a french part of canada for some reason
RE- not really dropped, but relegated to 6 weeks orso a year
citerzenship- see RE

so is anyone else in our 20000+ community starting UK GCSE's this year?

GCSE...what happened to the "O" levels? I come from Singapore and we basically follow the British system in terms of education and I sat for both the "O" and "A" levels...eons ago...I enjoyed the "O" levels but the "A" levels...they still give me nightmares to this day!

But of course, I must confess that I only started studied during the last 2-3 months before the exams! XD

Some subjects changed from 'O' levels to GCSEs around 1987/1988, with the process complete by 1990/1991.

I failed GCSE Maths (well a D grade) four times.

After that they realised that perhaps they should have submitted my coursework. I was getting 89% in the final exam >

To this day my mind locks up when it comes to mathematics. I can even add up simple numbers in my head, it's fucking awful and embarrassing to boot.

Maths, while it may seem boring is something to really concentrate on, believe me.
