the ex and I had a scare once where we thought she might have HPV due to her cell count being weird. But it turned out the pap smear came out flawed because we did it the night before her test.

The threat of stds wouldn't make being a virgin more comfortable for me. You just have to use some common sense. When out boozing, don't go home with the skanky looking broad with the whiskey and cigarette scarred voice, thats just bad news...and wear a rubber for one night stands

Yeah, as long as you're smart about what you do and you're comfortable with the choices you make, you're set.

Actually, the vaccination has been FDA approved and is available. The controversies springing up have to do with state governments attempting to make the vaccine mandatory. While this has brought out the "ZOMG this encourgages kids to have teh sex" types, those people are completely missing the much larger political and medical ramifications, but it's best not to go into all that.

As far as the question at hand, HPV. AIDS/HIV is much more likely to manifest itself and cause complications. There are literally tens of millions of people walking around with HPV. Not all of its forms are harmful, fewer still lead to the development of cervical cancer, and still fewer of those will die as a result of cervical cancer. 3,700 deaths per year is..not much. While that is likely to increase, it has a loooong way to go before it surpasses other forms of cancer, as evidenced here (note in particular the chart downpage).

I hate the way reports want to state that 90% of the population has this or that STD /virus but doesn't know about it. If it was sooooo damn common then why don't they test people for it starting when they are born? Hopefully HIV will have a vaccine/cure within 20 years.

I used protection before I met my wife, as did my wife, she also only had one other sexual parter besides myself, so hopefully we are ok.

Because women aquire the virus through sex...so testing for it when they're born will do nothing. And it would be insanely wrong to do a pap smear on a new born I think

You could be born with it if your parents had it. It carries in the blood.
