"But it's great for video editing!"

I bet my music videos would be a bazillion times better if I edited them on a Mac.

F*ck that!! 350-450 for Ultimate??! Thats f*cking robbery. I wonder if I will be able to get a student discount on it or something. I still wants my DX10 games.

BTW:

•Ubuntu Linux: $0 US/CAN

and XGL desktop on Ubuntu rocks the shit out of Aero.

I wouldn't say that Apple is the best way to go if price is your main consideration.
I mainly said that as a joke, because unless they've changed it, once you install Vista and "register" it with your computer, that's it. You can't just buy another registration code unless you get one of the packages, or even legitimately put it on another machine. Once it's on, it's on that machine. It locks it down to the hardware level.

If they've changed that, please let me know.

Jesus fucking christ! $450 for an OS??? I don't care if it IS "Ultimate Vista," at that price, the damn thing had also play some XBOX360 games or something. Like wash my car or do my laundry.

In all seriousness, does anyone know what the Ultimate version does that Microsoft feels they can get away with that price point?

Well, a brief Google revealed that it took the best features of the Business and Home versions and combined them into a single OS. But, still...

I don't know, I was sort of hoping that they would ALREADY be doing that with each additional version. I mean, why buy the Business version(s) when it won't be able to perform in ways that the cheaper (Home) version would?

(Still happy the updates are free, though)

I'll wait for the first service pack, buy the cheapest version, and force it to do whatever I want regardless of what features it's supposed to have or whether it's supposedly locked to my hardware etc. That's exactly what I did with XP, and I have no reason to expect it to be any different this time.

Buy the version that does what you need folks, thats why there are so many of them. I hardly think that most of the folks crying about the price of Ultimate are going to need business-critical encryption levels or the ability to connect to a domain at home.

this helps to reinforce my belief that I should wait for this to come out before getting a new computer, instead of getting the new computer now and then upgrading to vista.
