I saw that on the news earlier this week, they should have to pay several times the average price per gallon for the lush lawns they keep watered and pools they fill. Everything brown around them, then this bright green lawn, shouldn't be hard to spot---but in the scheme of things probably not the biggest waste of water there.

Also, didn't I see some agricultural scientists on 60 Minutes or something talking about the water taken from underground so deeply it will never be replaced and very possibly cause sinkholes or other ground disasters??? They were bringing up the almond and fruit tree crops as culprits too, iirc.

Why? When "saving" water by citizens (who only use 20% of the total water statewide) will only account for about 2% water saved, what's the point? And speaking for myself, I don't trust any aspect of government with MORE money. Why should they get more of something they waste? The city is absolutely corrupt. Just heard 2 days ago about an elderly couple who were consistently charged $32 a month for water use, then were suddenly charged nearly $52 THOUSAND.

Only On 2: DWP Admits Making Mistake On Van Nuys Couple’s $51K Water Bill « CBS Los Angeles

Took EIGHT MONTHS for the DWP to figure out THEY were at fault. Yeah, I don't trust the government with more money at all...

Okay, so you're not a fan of the government there, not going into a political convo nor should you as it's against our rules.... but you gotta vote if you want things to change, you didn't vote anybody in.... but you also vote to get them out... you got to start somewhere to make a difference. Keep that in mind.

    .

Now back to discussing the water shortage... without politics.
Also, this thread was about the morons who vandalized some water reserves, those idjits!!

From those of us looking in from other states, I'd go with over-populated, over-farmed and under-watered by rain or re-routing water from other sources ... has brought this situation to a crisis. As I mentioned, scientists have been warning this was coming for years.... it's past time to pay attention to them.

Oh, I definitely vote, and have been voting. But it essentially amounts to a "protest vote" out here. I'll leave it at that.

But yes, we are the losers. I can live without almonds, pistachios, grapes/wine, and a slew of other things that take up billions of gallons of water. I can't live without water. No one here can. It really is that simple.

Someone should find those jerks, lock them up, and deprive them of any and all water. Even toilet water.

I am still not understanding why they haven't green lit desalination plants they have the huge coastline, its not like its a land locked state.

I guess they will have to put dolphin safe labels on the water.

There's one in San Diego that's working. The biggest problem is how to deal with/dispose of the leftover "salt."

That and cost, from what I've read. Desalinization plants don't come cheap.

I have an idea. The sea salt can go into certain threads to counteract the regular salt that's in there. You know? Have more variety.....

If they are really concerned with it they could find the money, I am sure there is somewhere in the world looking for large amounts of readily available salt.

I am not sure if it would be edible but if it was that would be an even bigger positive.

    Free salt rations for everyone.

Yep, then people would complain about it, but then want more water and not understand why they can't have both.

You are so right, hopefully you'll be joined by millions who agree and want to make changes to how things are done there... No one can live without water for long.... surely they'll see that and soon.

Yeah, inquiring minds want to know... what's happened to these guys?

    This seems fair....and justified. :)

Fortunately, for now, I currently live in New Jersey so I don't have to worry about this problem.

I kinda laughed at Shatner's proposed water pipeline idea. Every time there's a drought the ol' pipeline project rears its head again. California's been trying to get a pipeline from Oregon for decades, but it never happened. Probably because OR would then suffer a drought as well. At least Shatner had the sense not to ask Oregon again & went straight for Washington.

I have no doubts that if this drought lasts long enough the state of California will be forced to cut water even more to farmers and the whole mess will end up in court.

It wil be messy and expensive.
