Visit the Battle of New Orleans memorial / battlefield from the War of 1812 (even though the Battle was in 1815 and after a treaty was signed, but not yet ratified by the US) By the way A Pirate helped save New Orleans, thus the Battlefield is named in a Pirate's Honor, Jean Lafitte. Chalmette Battlefield - Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve (U.S. National Park Service)
So finally went out to book this trip. Thanks again everyone for recos. It'll be 5 dudes in their late 30s. Going to the Bucs vs Saints home openers since the Giants vs Saints was too expensive and the wifey wouldn't let me miss Halloween with the 1yr old. Tropical Isle Original bar is down the block from my hotel so def trying this after I check in! I tried to book the Pelham, but they were booked Sept 18-21st!! We're staying at the Maison Dupuy. Cafe Du Monde is a definite after a night on the town. My friends and I are probably doing this Sat morning. My friend was VERY excited when I proposed this.
I went back to NO last year with my wife and had a grand ol' time. Here are some quick recommendations for you: Swamp airboat tour - this turned out to be a heck of a lot of fun, you get to tool around an amazingly huge swamp on a very fast airboat with a crazy Cajun showing you around, taking jumps and drift turns, and spying on the gators. Lots of fun. Music - get to a club, see some music, or just walk around the French Quarter or Frenchmen Street, you'll see some amazing jazz, blues and rock music. If you can find a parade going on (also known as a Second Line) feel free to join in. Food - NO is a great town for food, it's hard to go wrong though I'd stay out of the touristy chain places. I recommend going to Commander's Palace especially for lunch (they serve 25 cent martinis) - it's a dressier place, but the food is amazing. K-Paul's, Johnnies or any of the other well known places for po'boys, Dooky Chase for soul food (the lunch buffet is a great deal), Ruby Slipper Café for breakfast, Cochon or Butcher, R'Evolution...I could go on. Sights - the whole city is full of cool and weird stuff, you don't need to do a tour if you don't want to, just walk around the quarter or the Garden District on your own. I recommend checking out the Lafayette Cemetery if you like beautiful old statues. The World War II museum is pretty great as well. The streetcars are an easy and cheap way to get around. A cruise on the steamboat Natchez is fun as well. NO is a great town, you can be as well or poorly behaved there as you'd like, you can overeat, you can take a 'go cup' from any bar out to the quarter and walk around, you can see a hundred things you've never seen before. Enjoy! Tim "toy geek"
I say Live and let Live, but Live and let Die seems more appropriate here. Besides he can got to the Fillet of Soul in Harlem.
Never considered the airboat. I'm going to wait till about a week before and gauge the weather, but thanks for advising the option. We want to go to Commander's Palace. Not enough meals in a day! haha Well this can't be helped due to the Saints schedule. Just have to hope for the best in mid Sept.
Visited NO many years ago when I was a kid. Can't really speak much of it as I don't really remember much of the trip. Especially since Mom hated it and we went home just a couple days later(back to Alabama). But I still vividly recall the "highlight" of the trip: eating at a McDonalds and witnessing a drug deal in plain sight right outside in front of the big front window. They shook hands and we could see the bag of coke and wad of cash pass between them. That was when Mom decided to go home.
