How come the heat kills in Europe, but not in the US?

CNN has an article (too lazy for link) talking about how English, French, and German officials are scrambling to prepare for another heat-wave catastrophe similar to 2003 when 15,000 French died and 2,000 British died because of the heat.

What I don't understand is yesterday, it got to 37C or 98.6F in Britian, and one man was admitted to the hospital and another woman died.

I'm sorry, but it's been over 100F here where I live for a whole bloody week and no one has died. So why is it that people die in the same heat elsewhere?

Come on.. WWII showed us that France and England is full of wussies. I'm kidding... I'm guessing that air conditioning is not as popular over there as it is over here.

The cities there are much older, with cramped stone buildings and claustrophobic streets. There's no breeze to speak of, and the humidity is unbearable. Most parts of the States are dry and windy.

u mad?

The copius amounts of McDonalds we've eaten over the years had given us a built in lard barrier to withstand the heat. Mmmmm lard....

Air Con is not even close to widespread. And Randomferret is, once again, a voice of reason.

Because Europe is filled with nothing but old people?
I saw a Boxing commercial and it said "It's a fight to the finish" Thats a good place to end.
