Metallica with Cliff was miles better, but since that's only 3/9 albums Megadeth has the stronger discography so I'd vote for them. *waits for smkspy to post awful opinion of best Metallica was late Metallica*
To be honest Burton Metallica was awesome. Newstead Metallica made Metallica a commercial success. Trujillo Metallica has it's moments. And Dave Mustaine is more talented than Ulrich or Hetfield.
It saddens me to think of how great Metallica could have been if they kept Dave on. Kirk is great but Dave is just better overall.
Metallica. I may be 17 but my dad only remembers late Metallica so that's what I listen to. Even if I can drum about as well as Ulrich.
I agree. And they wouldn't have to go through therapy and make a movie about it. Plus, I think they could have retained their massive popularity if Lars and James would have stopped being dicks and still have Jason in the band.
I struggle night and day about this. Kill 'Em All, Ride the Lightning, and Master of Puppets are such flawless albums they are almost painful to listen too. But Megadeth's Rust in Peace is perhaps one of the best metal albums of all time, topping anything Metallica ever has, and ever will, do. That album took thrash to a new level. It was fast, aggressive, but it wasn't stupid. It was smart, it was technical, it was complex and endlessly entertaining to listen too. The dual assault of Dave Mustaine and Marty Friedman, plus Junior on the side, was the holy fucking trinity. Nick Menza was probably their best drummer too, not a jazz guy, not some studio hack, but real stand out dude. Megadeth haven't taken mis-stepped as bad either. Yeah, Risk and Super Collider are ass, but as a whole it's more consistent than Metallica's. They don't seem as bloated either. Mustaine is a bit of a jackass though. I vote Megadeth. David Mustaine's tone, playing, everything is better than either of Metallica's axemen. His stint with Marty Friedman (also a better player than arguably all three of them)? Flawless. Hetfield has a better voice though. I feel his sailor voice is more fitting for the genre than Mustaine's wail. Lar Ulrich is a lazy, rich asshat who can't drum his way out of a paper bag anymore. Megadeth has had some really, really solid drummers. Nick Menza, Gar Samuelson(?), etc. All better than Lars. Cliff Burton is a better bass player than David though. His inventive use of wah and distortion pedals was relatively unheard of at the time. He knew just when to hold down the rhythm, and when to do something more acrobatic. It was never just to show off though. I felt his more classical influence was a crucial piece to the sound of early Metallica. Always appreciated Dave's playing more than Jason's and Robert's playing, frankly. Jason and Rob felt more safe being more strictly rhythm , where David was like a middle ground between those two and Burton. Anyway, Megadeth. I fucking love Cliff Burton though. He was my earliest inspiration as a bass player.
The sad thing is that Metallica will win the poll due to popularity. There are many teens on the board that heard of Metallica and not much of Megadeth so they will choose Metallica without actually hearing both bands.
Nailed it. Metallica got that brand recognition, which is sad because Megadeth's deserves more love at this point in their careers.
Yup. I would probably probably put Iron Maiden's "Powerslave" a half a tick higher on my top list. But yeah, "Rust in Peace" is in my top 3.
Probably should've tacked onto my age, the fact that I've listened to a good deal of both bands. And despite all the "oooohh yeeaah"s of Hetfield's, I like his voice more than Mustaine's. Just clarifying I'm not in that biased group
