UPDATE: New Pics, More thoughts

Hey, so for whatever reason, Australia got the "Ultimate" Transformers Prime Beast Hunters toys in earlier then everyone else, so I picked one up. Australia RRP is $69, which is about $29 more then the average Voyager right now and about $10 cheaper then the Leader Class figures were in DOTM.

The Dragon mode is the main reason I got this, as we're not even sure he'll show up in robot mode in the show yet. It's big, which is why I waited for this figure over the Voyager one and looks pretty menacing. To be honest, he should have more silver paint on the eyebrows and wings, though, which is a little sad that they cheaped out on paint on a figure this size and price point. The orange paint on the bottom of the tail that is shown on the box is missing as well, but that comes into play more in robot mode.

The biggest complaint I have with the entire toy is the dragon-mode head and neck. There is zero articulation in anything above the shoulders due to the "Fire-breath" gimmick. To do this, you push down the lever on his neck leans down and his mouth opens and glows. The toy takes two AA batteries to light up, which are not included, so I don't have a pic of it working yet. It wouldn't be a big problem if when not using the gimmick left him in a more natural pose, but the way its bent backwards looks awkward.

The wings are huge, just like the box boasts and are very well done. They can be folded up and down and swivel backwards and forwards, which makes for some decent movement and they look pretty great. Unfortunately, the tail has no articulation, because of how it is used as a weapon in robot mode. I am disappointed that the robot-mode gimmick took so much from the dragon mode, as the tail can not be bent or moved in any way, I would've much preferred a tail more akin to Ripclaw's. A minor complaint is from the way the toy was designed; the wings clip on over the battery case and often fall off, although its not a huge deal because they clip back on very easily. The cross-bow weapons plug in to each wing and can fire their missiles by pressing the button.

Even as big as this guy is, he's still not in perfect scale with Voyager Megatron. Still looks far better then with the Voyager Predaking, though!

The Transformation is very simple, even when it comes to Predacons. Pop off the tail, fold his neck down, rotate his robot head around, stand the figure up and turn his legs around.

Predaking's robot mode is the surprise star of the toy, in my opinion. He has some good articulation, he's huge, he looks dominant and his weapons are pretty badass looking. I hope he appears in the show, because he comes across as really cool. The two cross-bows plug into his wrist and the dragon's tail becomes his main weapon, the Infernum blade.

The Infernum blade looks pretty awesome, its gigantic and fearsome looking. The box shows it painted orange on the blade to give it a more firey look, rather than the silver on the actual toy, but I personally prefer it. I've hard complaints of Predaking finding it difficult to hold but I am having no such problems, he holds it very sturdily and he wont drop it even when shaken (unlike the wings). I can imagine the sword clashing with the Star Saber in a final battle, if he has the blade in-show and he gets a robot-mode in show.

In conclusion, the dragon-mode is a little disappointing, which is a big shame because it should be the main attraction of the toy, considering so far it is the only mode we know he has in the show. The sword and especially the fire-breath gimmicks really hinder this mode, but I feel despite this, it is probably still the best representation of the character we have yet due to its size. Predaking needs to be huge. The robot mode is pretty awesome, but if you're getting him just because of the show, then this mode might be ignored by many. I'm happy I have him because I wanted a giant Predaking, but if you don't care about scale, the price might not justify the toy.

Things that are awesome:
-Everyone gets custom leg decos now!
-New pieces! Blight's claws, backpiece that has an attachment point for a 1x1 brick, Lugnut's bomb arm things, probably more I can't think of.
-Autobots and Decepticons now have faces with printed on mouthplates (Powerglide, Hardshell). This will make it easier to create customs of characters with mouthplates!
-Lugnut, Powerglide, Perceptor, and Hardshell are amazing!
-Female Autobot face!
-Awesome Vehicon!
-Facial hair on Scourge!

Things that are not so awesome:
-Still stress marks around a lot of wrists.
-Insect legs are still floppy when connected to the arms (at least on mine, I was excited because one was tight, but let down when the other immediately flopped down loosely).
-I wish Arcee's face was gray to set it off more against her helmet. Also wish that she had her Leia hairbuns helmet.
-Scourge and Blight are pretty lame, at least in robot mode. Scourge really needs some wings in back (paging Dr. Tresob!)
-Acid Wing and Vehicon seem a bit unnecessary, but I get why they're included (easy repaints, keep costs down)
-Perceptor's face doesn't exactly fit with his character.

Scored Grimwing last week...

Note: Mods, if there is already a thread for him, please kindly merge.

Scored Grimwing last week during one of my hunting romps.
To cut the long story short - He is awesome.

Compared to other Predacons I have (Predaking, Lazerback and Skystalker), this figure stood out as one of the best Predacon to date.

General Observations:
One thing that impressed me when I unboxed Grimwing was to find out how tight the joints are. Unlike my Predaking figure, Grimwing looks solid and are able to hold the poses well. In addition to that, the proportions for Grimwing is spot on 'heroic' looking. it is difficult to explain, but all i can say is that once you have him, he looks the part of a hero instead of a villian.
There is also alot of sculpted detail on the figure, which pleases me to no end.

Articulation:
Excellent articulation all around. He is what to be expected from a modern Voyager figure and Grimwing delivers it in spades. The pictures I took will show the types of heroic and good poses he can pull off. All in all, as an articulation nut, I am impressed. He looks dynamic, he looks bulky and even his beast mode, you call pull of some really nice poses.

Colors:
Springer in Beast form - minus the triple changer feature. Yup, that is right, he has green all over him, but not to the point that it becomes gaudy and becomes an eyesore. he has the right amount of green on him and the different tones of green are distributed equally in this figure. even the grey plastic used is not the typical swirly grey plastic but solid dark grey plastic. it adds to its appeal. The wings are painted green and tampoed with some Cybertronian symbol.

Beast Mode:
UrsaGrpyh? Urzagriff? Hmmm..whatever, the beast mode is servicable at best and his spots the usual 'bend-over and transform to beast mode' scheme. Not very intituive but like I said, serviceable. I think alot of thought can be but into the transformation scheme, but seeing how impressive the bot mode is, this is quite forgiven. Only a bit. But all I can say, you could still pull off some neat poses in the bot mode.

Transformation:
what is there to say? It is simple, straight to the point and if you transformed some Beast Hunters figure, you will know where to start and relish on how simple yet elegant the transformation is. i did it even without prior to watching youtube reviews or even instructions.

Blackbeak:
In my honest opinion, this add on would have been fun, but the string gimmick is a let down for me. He is suppose to be his own character, but to me, he is kind of a waste. But all in all, which Cybertronian you can find that carries a decapitated bird head that talks back as a weapon? Novelty value here. But dies off quite fast.

Conclusion?
Grimwing also marked the return of normal sized voyagers into the line. DOTM was atrocious at best since most of the voyagers are like slightly tall deluxes. But Grimwing doesn't disappoint. And I will say this again - he is big, bulky, looks powerful and a fun to play figure. I had many great hours playing, posing and taking pictures of him, and till now I am still impressed with the figure. He is a solid figure and will make a nice addition to those collecting the Beast Hunters line and those who love Beast Wars/Machine. Even if you are not a fan of Beast Wars, I'd say, give him a shot. You might like him.

Go get him. he is worth it and some how, I can't help to fathom that his bio reeks of Beast wars Silverbolt (who is also a fuzor like Grimwing.)

My final score - 8/10.

Beast Hunters Voyager Ultra Magnus

Meet Ultra Magnus.

Image:...

Meet Ultra Magnus.

He's a retool of the Transformers Prime Robots in Disguise (RID) Voyager Optimus Prime. I like the chest piece. Though small, the design is reminiscence of his G1 appearance. The figure has a decent likeness to how he appeared in the cartoon. However the shade of blue is too light and he could use more paint at his mid section. The elbows and the sides of his forearms could use a touch of red too.

He comes with a jetpack, the Forge of Solus battle hammer and 2 missiles. The hammer and the missiles may be stored on the jetpack and carried in both robot and truck mode

You can peg the jetpack onto his forearm and have him use it as a shield

The missiles are launched from his shoulders. The top part of his shoulders may be flipped down so he can aim them forwards.

You can attach the missiles to the side of his shoulders if you like. I think they're too long to be placed there though.

The Forge of Solus should be bigger.

He's got good articulation. Arm rotation is hindered by his body due to their curved nature and long shoulders. But it allows him to hold the hammer double handed comfortably.

I like the look of this Beast Hunters version but I prefer the colours of the RID one.

Quick comparison.

He transforms into a truck. The image on the package shows it with smokestacks but they are not present on the toy. With the jetpack attached, it kinda looks like a tow truck.

Definately in my top three commander class figures. The mold is fantastic and the metallic paint really puts him above most of the other commanders.

In robot mode he is very show accurate when viewed from the front, with the exception of the paint on his eye. It's hard to imagine this figure looking any better, but painting the eye as it appears on the show would have done so.

From behind, he suffers in some areas, and shines in others. The hollowed out gun is distracting, but the show accurate detail on the spine was an unexpected surprise. Oh and he's also missing the cannon hose.

For size comparison, here he is with commander class Megatron and legion class Vehicon.

Overall I was very pleased with this figure and he is an excellent addition to my Cyberverse display.

Prime Beast Hunters Deluxe Dreadwing

Got this guy along with Skystalker today. As with the Skystalker review, apologies for cellphone...

Got this guy along with Skystalker today. As with the Skystalker review, apologies for cellphone pics. Better than nothing, I hope.

The stock photos we’ve seen of Dreadwing pretty much cover his appearance; if you didn’t like him in those photos, he won’t look any better in person. I personally think he’s okay. I get what they’re trying to do with the feet, making him look like a bird of prey in flight, but to me, it still looks like a jet with Big Bird feet.

His weapons are, frankly, dumb. Again, stock photos show how they combine and attach, so nothing new there. I like the idea of a combining chainsaw spear missile launcher halberd, but the execution looks cheap and the detail is soft.

His missiles (he comes with two) can attach under his wings. His launcher can mount on top of the jet, and the chainsaw on the bottom, but doing so hurts my eyes.

Now his wings, those are a high point for me. They’re made using a semi-soft plastic; not floppy at all, but flexible enough to take quite a bend without damage. I love the various posing options they allow for, and they can be spread out in both jet and robot mode. They’re just outright fun to play with.

The nosecone is supposed to look like a raptor’s beak. This works well from a side view.

But from most other angles….

MEGA JET SCHNOZZ!
I’m going to have to strip the paint and Dremel down that nose.

Transformation is, as other reviewers have noted, quite intuitive. It’s basically the Cyberverse Commander’s transformation, with a couple of extra steps (elongating the arms and posing the wings). It would have been nice to have the legs and pelvis collapse and expand, but I’m okay with it, being a sucker for traditional Macross VF-1 transformations.

For those who hate soft plastic, his head horns are made from hard plastic…and I’m scared they’ll break off every time I turn his head. This is one place where soft plastic might have been a better choice.

His weapons can be carried in his hands or mounted on his back. His missiles can, if desired, be held in his hands, but it looks a little…weird. Not as weird, though, as storing a missile in the hole that used to be in the jet’s belly; I’m not posting a picture, but just imagine Dreadwing shooting out an egg…

Like I said, I’m a sucker for Valkyrie-formers, so Dreadwing gets a higher rating in my book than most others might allow him. I’d say if you didn’t like his look in the photos, you’ll like him even less in person.
I end this review with: Bird Gerwalk!

Didn’t see a non-video review up, so here goes. As usual, apologies for the cellphone pics.

Skystalker is a sleek, lean dragonformer with a frosty color scheme that really stands out in the Prime/BH line. His beast mode is gorgeous, with an elegant serpentine line defining his neck, spine, and tail.

He comes with two white discs that can pressure-launch from his wings. They’re heavy, though, so they don’t go very far, and I much prefer the look of him without the discs, so in the bits box they go.

My only (very slight) quibble is that his wings can’t properly extend out to the sides, and are only hinged to move forward and backward (there are additional hinges to allow the discs to shoot forward, but that doesn’t do much to make him look like he’s flying).

Note the spike on his tail. That becomes a cestus in robot mode, but it’s easy to miss when unpacking him. Mine fell off, unnoticed, and ended up between the plastic trays…which was where I found it when I went dumpster diving for it later on.

His transformation is actually somewhat more complex that it appears at first, but is still pretty much typical beast standupformation. His arms and wing roots have an interesting snap-together mechanism, and the pelvis slides together to make a leaner robot waist. Incidentally, his head transformation also allows for a good-looking beast-headed robot, which is fun.

As mentioned earlier, you can peg his tail spike onto his hand as a cestus. I really like this accessory; it’s small, unobtrusive, and doesn’t have a silly gimmick.

As noted in Optibotimus’ video review, while he is very nicely articulated, he is quite difficult to balance in the standard a-stance. He’s quite good at action poses, however, especially if one uses his tail as a third point of balance. He can also hold a one-legged side kick easily…more easily than actually having him stand normally, in fact.

His wings flip forward to launch the discs. I prefer his look without the discs; the wings remind me of a Macross cannon. The wings can also flip all the way over to allow him to shoot from the hip, like some kind of weird alien assault cannon.

He’s so aesthetically pleasing that I’m willing to overlook his little flaws (simple transformation, robot balance issues) and just play with him as a toy.
