So... what's the best technique for removing old stickers and their gunk/residue from G1 figures? My friend WuLongTi suggested products similar to Goo Gone, but we're not sure if the stuff would damage the paint on the plastic and diecast parts.
Along the lines of Goo Gone, could you use it to clean a whole G1 figure? Always wanted to try it but scared to, but it works wonders on stickers!
In the past with restoring a g1 figure I took him apart, washed him in dish soap and polished the plastic with Maguire’s plastic polish and put him back together.
I stick to my fingernail on anything vintage, for safety's sake. Dry cloth for the residue. I don't know what that chemical exposure from Goo Gone would do long-term.
I'm VERY conservative with my application of Goo Gone, and I use my fingernails as well first. Any kind of chemicals are a last resort for me. Even then, after application, I immediately wipe any Goo Gone off. Sure the chemicals and materials are exposed at that point, but the Goo Gone is mostly taking care of the sticker and residue more than any thing of the plastic. I've done this for years, and yet to see any kinds of negative results. Again, my key is that I only let the Goo Gone do it's job mainly on the labels, not as much on the plastic.
Holly crap this is exactly what I've been looking for!! Thank you so much!! Just like the stuff the Junkions used on Ultra Magnus =)
