Ok this is actually a documentary I'm making for fun and for others who have been lurking here but never got the courage to start and perhaps when my girlfriend comes back, she can use this to modify her new acquired Metroplex

planning

My planning started easy, since I saw a RID Custom Ultra Magnus... which I though was breathtaking and most of all wotthy of the title Ultra Magnus
So I'm gonna use Optimus Prime Fire Convoy as base, togheter with parts of RID God (Ultra)Magnus to created a new car-carrier

 

disassemble

Well this part is rather easy for the basic figure RID Optimus Prime Fire Convoy, since it's just a bunch of screws and not cutting is required as of yet!
(and on parts or upgrade parts + RID God Magnus will follow later)

I removed the electrics (since the don't really like water), sorted the part which will remain unpainted and sealed those away (to make sure I won't lose them)
The other parts (mostly red of-course) are ready for cleaning [see cleaning section], also like to point out that I leave most screws in during the process, so It's easier later on..

I've also disassembled the RID Prime Upgrade parts... the hands & arm-mounted guns will be white, then the feet/arms/shoulders will be blue. (the rest like toes/tyres/shins remain unpainted)

 

cleaning

The cleaning process is also pretty straightforward, so just use a little bit of soap and (not to hot, not to cold) water!
So after the assemble process the parts that remain un-modded, became separated and went for a little bath...
after a period of time (in my case 1or2hrs), go and turn on a heatsource (radiator in this example), make sure a thick multi layer towel/cloth is underneath the transformer parts (so that the do not melt or warp) and let them dry for a couple of hours (I'll go to sleep now!)

modification

In my case I'll be modifying the Upgrade chest-piece, the default (RID Prime)Magnus head and the upgraded Ultra Magnus head
I started cutting the surface to get a flat feeling, because the default Upgraded chest-piece was horrible to work with.

Then I prepared a 2 component resin/glue (something) from Bison
You got 15minutes until it gets to stiff to get it even on the figure.
(I used extra of hardener, cuz the layer is gonna be 0.5-1cm thick)

Waited 5min so it was perfect for me to work with the roughed up version!
At this point I just pressed in the chest-piece holding it in al light source, so I could tell if I had in aligned the way I wanted.

When it was just right... I'll leave it be for 30-45 minutes
(sometimes a little longer, you must be able to push on the resin)
When you push the resin it must not leave sticky residue on your fingers

then I made gentle strokes to even things up a little...

EXTRA:
for the head the above basic was the same but use en flat-head screwdriver to form the facial characteristics!

I used a Armada Prime Powered-Up head to become the Upgrade Ultra Magnus head and carved the faceplate away.

 

painting

I'm gonna use Tamiya (Spray)paint and Revell model (brush)paint, Metallic Red / Metallic Blue / Ultra Gloss White / Flat Black ...
(not much to show, just wait a bit longer)

update: I use long screws to screw in the existing screwholes, so that you don't need to touch the object you're painting and afterwards it makes it even easier to connect a iron-wire to it so it can hang out to dry  

 

assembly

Well I'm probably gonna get some paintrub issues cuz I didn't remove any pins... but the end results are pretty good  

 

detailing

For detailing I'll be using Revell model (brush)paint in the following colors: Silver / Gunmetal / Brass .... (and maybe other along the way)

sealing & protecting

I'm gonna need advice on this one... which finish is durable, but can combine with the Revell Email model paints?

 

dude, these are the basics to almost every customizing project, I think each already has 10 tutorials existing on this site with proven great results. or- Is this more of a "how to repaint RID Prime specifically" tutorial?

 

Agreed.... if this is a WIP for your specific figure then it is fine, but if it is a tutorial on how to generally customize, as Mike said.... there are plenty of them on this site already.

 

It indeed is more a RID PRIME customization, which I'll do try so extremely detailed that no question need to be asked, so a WIP + TUT in 1thread  

And of course helping other to turn PRIME into MAGNUS also  

 

I know but I've never seen 1 that covered all steps... AtoZ
and had lots of pics and detailed description on every chapter  

But as I only stated it's hitting 2 birds with 1stone WIP + TUT  

 

I like this. I miss the old days when everyone was openly helping each other with their customs and letting everyone know each step they take to achieve a certain result. Instead of just posting finished customs. I learned everything I know about prop making, modelbuilding and transformers customs through these kind of threads. I would love to return to the customs-pre-ebay-era. It would be a lot easier for all the beginners to start their own customs.

Nice try, but a Bit to much for me, i did a q&a in a German Forum, DA And my own Board, cause it doesnt exist in German. I lesende customs of soleac333, Wheel Jack, Jin saotome And frenzy_rumble.

But even if I succeed in bringing just 1 mere soul towards customizing, then I have succeeded my quest by spreading tha word (or pics)

Not everyone may need the help but I think it's cool for a beginner to see a in-depth step by step process of how to do a custom.In my opinion you can never have to many tutorials as not everyone has the exact same process for their builds.The more we have the more we can learn of different ways of doing things.

Keep up the awesome work and I can't wait to see this project finished!!!!!!!!

 

Gotta confess, I was kinda confused myself...

 

We do have a ton of tutorial resources, and while this may be a repeat of some things, it may be useful after it's completed. However, this sort of thing belongs more in Creative General Discussion, so here we are.

That being said, G60Force, I would highly advise you going through our own tutorials first, as repeats of the same sorts of things won't be resourced here.

Also to note, since Radicons Tutorials covers a wide array of many tips and techniques, a "end all be all" type of tutorial won't be resourced either. What I can do is take a certain aspect (like "cleaning") and make a tutorial out of that.
