Well i have seen a lot of disdain for oil based enamels but i find them use full 80% of my collection is enamel. However i do not hate acrylics and i use them as much as oil based. my current favorite paint is tamiya but i think it may be because i like the smell lol. i have started to try out some games work shop paints and i am not amazed by them like some ppl are. they are good but for my taste i have to thin them down allot or use a damp cloth kinda like the wet palette tutorial.

getting on viscosity i personally like a thin paint so i can run it through crevices and flow the paint rather than leave brush strokes. most or all of my work has been airbrushed with a base color then brushing on the fine detail.

i like oil paint because of its durability as well as being able to wash a color on with thinner. when you wash on a color with acrylic the paint separates and does not cover well. i also like how you can feather two colors together on a subject with oils. what i like about acrylics is the way you can cover with it . the washing out effect i mentioned above is great for some pieces or parts as well. also the clean up of acrylics is a breeze.

recently i started to use inks and well i have fallen in love with ink if i could paint the whole figure with ink i would . lol

so guys what do you use? what do you think of oils over acrylic? do you use ink?

testors ,tamiya , reaper, games workshop, and aerosol can all kinds.

btw my picture only represents about half of my collection the rest are scattered about on my desk and in the cupboard

 

I just used some GW acrylic for the first time tonight, and I've got to agree with you that the paint is a bit too thick. I only have that, Testors and Model Master. I like the testors stuff, but I haven't even tried the model master stuff because I only have one color in it and I haven't needed it yet.

 

I'm still stuck on Krylon Fusion and Testors paint markers.... 

I just dont have a steady enough hand to do brush work (dont have the patience either) I woud love to get into an Airbrush set up, but that aint gonna happen any time soon.

Thats a nice little setup you got your self too....I like how on some of the bottles you have actually applied some of the paint to the caps.....good idea  

 

Love Sharpie fine point oil based paint pens. They're great for like paneling and fine detail work... plus they come in like 15 colors.

 

I'm on board with PK, Krylon Fusion & Testors are my weapons of choice.
As of late I have found the Krylon Outdoor Spaces is better for chipping and paint ware.

 

OK i officially hate GW gold i will never use that from them again. BTW i am not judging the whole line based on the gold i have some ink and other colors by them that are fine.

i just firmly believe now that metallics should be left for oil based. there are exceptions to this but i am speaking in general

 

Or just make your own.  

 

I use GW paints,mainly because its what im used too.
Alot of my paints are older style gw paints & my main complaint with the newer gw paints i have is that they are too thin & weak.
As for Inks i go for Acrylic inks from arts stores,the current gw inks are shockingly bad imo.

thanks   i got the idea from encline. reaper paints are slowly starting to win me over . i think most of my issues are because of GW metallics are not what i am used to the golds i were using were more like glitter glue rather than paint.  i could not thin the bottle because it was not my paint. so i used a wet paper towel to thin it down. thinning this way was NOT the answer

Dude I know what you mean I bought the set with high hopes only to be disappointed. What brand ink are you using, I might go to Micheal's later.

 

At the moment i use Daler Rowney & have to say they are pretty good.
I used to use Magic colour but cant find them anymore,Now these were fantastic.
Both of these come in glass jars with pipets.
Thats another really bad thing with gw inks NO pipets,makes things really messy.

 

Cool I will look for some and experiment. I hate GW(and most others) bottles I have a tendency to be into much of a hurry and am always tipping them over. I buy medical dropper bottles and put everything in them typically.

did you try reaper inks the black i have been using is good and the olive drab tree shading is killer awsome that one is like three colors in one. honestly though i just started to use inks ,but i still recomend the Reaper tree bark shading especially if you do any kind of bones or flesh coloring.

Yeah I'm not to big a fan or reapers inks, they are close to GW in quite a few aspects. I am ok with Vallejo's Inks though.

 

I dig my Fusions. I'll typically custom mix these nowadays and apply them via air brush. For detail, blending, dry brushing, I'm loving my Testor's Model Masters....Enamels.

Local hobby shop has about 200 colors, and about 30 metallics. I gotta say, there's nothing like an enamel metallic.  

 

oh man, I'm a real cheapskate. I buy paint spraycans and only use stock colours to ensure repeatability. I just spray out the amount i need into a container, add thinner, and airbrush it. wastage is minimal and I have loads of paint left.

 

I use both enamels and acryllics and fusion. I normally simply use whatever I have to to get the color that I want, and by not limiting to any one thing, my color pallet is much much larger  

 

Ain't that the truth Brother. I use mostly Acrylics and Enamels.

For Acrylics I use Testors, Tamiya, and GW(but it has to be watered down first). I mostly use my acrylics for base coloring and highlights,dirt marks, and detailing.

My enamels are completely metallics only, GW is the worst for metallics unless your going for a T-1000 liquid terminator look.

I'm really curious about inks. I have no clue on what to do with them or where to buy them.

 

In the midst of talking about inks and what not I forgot to say what I am using now. You can't buy it in stores but I might start selling it myself. I am making my own paints that are Acrylic based(with Vinyl) but are as tough(maybe even tougher) than enamels. Using a base I have found along with some awesome pigments I have mixed over 50 different colors(including opaque colors and several different metallics) so far(such as the ones for the Hulk I posted a couple days ago) and I have found that even without primer the stuff is sticking incredibly well to plastic(both hard and soft plastics) in fact for a superman that I am painting right now I got the red on an area I did not want to and it had already dried, I had to scratch it off digging my nail into the plastic and some of it still wont come off. Have not gotten the primer that I want to try with it yet but I am sure that I will achieve a finish that will rival that of hobby paints(After all they cut corners on just about everything, especially pigments). It is a science and a reward in itself and it is actually costing me about the same to make it as it would to buy.
